Chic Office Kitchen Space Makeover With a Fast Turnaround

Chic Office Kitchen Space Makeover

This office kitchen space makeover happened in a relative flash. Danielle Moss & Alaina Kaczmarski of The Everygirl had just moved into a new office space, and they wanted to freshen up the kitchen on a tight deadline.

The Home Depot’s kitchen refacing service helped Danielle and Alaina with the design of the new kitchen and then handled the installation in just a couple of weeks. And, as you’ll see, it looks fabulous!

Revamping a Chic Kitchen Space

We moved into our first office last September, five years after formally launching The Everygirl. As luck would have it, we found the perfect studio loft in Chicago’s West Loop – a bustling area that’s growing every day with new startups and co-working spaces.

Our office space is an open room with exposed brick walls, oversized timber beams, and high ceilings. Exactly what we always wanted! The walls were dark gray and the kitchen was dated, but we had big plans for this little office.

Fortunately, the team at The Home Depot was on board to help us transform our tiny kitchen into the gorgeous space it is now!

Here’s how the office kitchen space makeover unfolded.

The Before

Dark office kitchen space before getting a makeover

As you can see, we were working with a fairly basic kitchen— all function, no beauty. There is no direct sunlight streaming in, so it can get pretty dark in here, especially in the winter. We wanted to brighten the space, not only to make it more livable, but we also wanted to make it better suited for shooting food and entertaining stories for our blog.

Lightening up the kitchen would brighten the whole office space, but we could never would have predicted just how much better it would be.

The Office Kitchen Space Makeover Design Goals

  1. Brighten the kitchen–we knew we wanted light colored cabinets, countertops, and a reflective backsplash that would add light.
  2. Beautify the space–update the laminate countertops, orange-hued wooden cabinets, hardware and faucet with more beautiful, quality fixtures.
  3. Maximize storage–add more drawers and cabinets to increase the amount of hidden and exposed storage.

The Office Kitchen Space After the Makeover

The Kitchen Cabinets

Chic Office Kitchen Space Makeover

Outlining the look, functionality, and plan for the cabinets was the first step. Because we painted the office walls white and planned on having a white backsplash, we wanted to go with a soft neutral color for the cabinets. The paint color we chose for the cabinets is a mix between grey and beige… greige if you will.

We chose a classic Shaker Style cabinet door design and asked that an additional upper cabinet be added to extend the height and maximize storage.

Chic Office Kitchen Space Makeover

The Home Depot design team drew up a plan to incorporate open shelving above the sink and oven. They’re perfectly placed to show off some of our prettier styling pieces and dishware.

The Farmhouse Sink and Bridge Faucet

The shining star of the kitchen is the large white farmhouse sink that anchors the center of the small space. We knew we wanted this traditional piece with a gorgeous bridge faucet in chrome. It’s very feminine and traditional and adds a beautiful backdrop for our photo shoots.

Quartz Countertops

Quartz kitchen countertop

We needed countertops that would be durable but also light and pretty. Marble looks great, but we knew that was a fickle material that stains easily. We ended up going with a quartz countertop in a pattern that has the look of marble, but is much tougher against staining.

The Kitchen Island

Chic Office Kitchen Space Makeover with a Kitchen Island

Finally, we worked with the Home Depot team to customize a kitchen island.

We really needed the functionality of an island but didn’t have a ton of space left, so the one the team designed is long and narrow. This way it doesn’t eat up too much of our work space in the studio, but it still offers additional counter and cabinet space. It also add another spot to work and enjoy coffee and donuts!

Having the new kitchen completely transformed our one-room office, and it couldn’t be more Everygirl. Not only did the light color of the cabinets and countertops brighten the space, but the reflection of the glossy subway tile backsplash truly magnifies that amount of light! We now have the best backdrop for shoots and we’ve even started filming our first video talk show with this kitchen as the “set.”

Faux Coffered Ceiling Using Beadboard and Moulding

Faux Coffered Ceiling Using Beadboard and Moulding

This DIY ceiling makeover uses beadboard and moulding pieces to create a faux coffered ceiling. It’s a simple way to add a little extra architectural interest in an otherwise drab ceiling.

This is the work of Amber Oliver who writes the In the Loop Blog.

Follow along with her step-by-step instructions to see how she completed her DIY faux coffered ceiling.

DIY Faux Coffered Ceiling

Before we moved in, our house was completely gutted– all the way to the studs! That gave us a blank canvas to make each room exactly what we wanted. We decided to focus on one of our most used rooms– our living room.

After going back and forth trying to decide if we wanted a “focus wall,” we ultimately decided to do a DIY ceiling makeover instead. We wanted to add architectural interest but had to work with standard 8-foot ceilings. We installed a faux coffered ceiling with beadboard panels, 1 x 6’s, and moulding.

The Ceiling Before the Makeover

Plain ceiling that could use a makeover

Materials and Tools

*Note: You will measure your space and decide how you want your ceiling laid out before purchasing materials. This will help you decide how many panels, what length of 1 x 6’s, and how many feet of moulding you need.

Step 1

Cutting beadboard to create a faux coffered ceiling

Cut the beadboard panels. We cut the panels so they were all the same dimensions and would fill the ceiling evenly. This will make everything symmetrical when it’s time to add the 1 x 6’s.

Step 2

Locating ceiling joists

Locate and mark the ceiling joists.

We decided to attach the panels into the ceiling joists so we were sure they were up securely.

You can locate ceiling joists with a stud finder, or go into the attic and have a look for yourself!

Step 3

Faux Coffered Ceiling Using Beadboard and Moulding

Drill pilot holes into the panels based on your measurements for the ceiling joists. This will make it so much easier to get the screws in quickly when you are holding it up to the ceiling!

Step 4

Cutting vent hole in beadboard for a DIY faux coffered ceiling

Measure and cut out any holes for light fixtures and vents with a jig saw.

Be sure to measure twice and cut once. We used a recessed light hole saw to get the perfect circles around the lights.

Optional: Use a router to make the edges look nice and finished.

Step 5

Marked locations of ceiling joists

Attach the panels one at a time to the ceiling by screwing into the ceiling joists. We did this with two people, but if you have an extra set of hands you will be grateful!

You’ll notice that your room is probably not perfectly square, and you may have some gaps. This is okay because you will be covering all the seams with 1 x 6’s later.

Step 6

Nailing beadboard onto a ceiling

After getting the panel up, go back and tack up with a finish nailer if it is sagging. Try to keep the nail holes in line so it will be easier to cover them later.

Step 7

Building a faux coffered ceiling

Measure and cut your 1 x 6’s. You’ll want to use boards that will go the full length, so break up the longest sides of the room by covering the shorter seams first.

Step 8

Building a faux coffered ceiling

Use Liquid Nails and a few finish nails to attach the 1 x 6’s into place.

Step 9

Adding moulding to a DIY faux coffered ceiling

After you’ve covered all the seams with 1 x 6’s, it’s time to add the moulding.

I used Cove moulding, but you can use any shape you’d like. This is an important part because it really gives it a finished look and will cover any spaces or gaps that are showing. The moulding was installed with 1-inch finish nails.

Step 10

Prep your new faux coffered ceiling for paint by filling in any nail holes or gaps with wood filler, then sand. After the ceiling is prepped, it’s time to paint!

With just a few basic materials you can turn your drab ceiling into a statement ceiling. This is faux coffered ceiling project is pretty labor intensive, but the finished project is worth it!

Cream-Colored Patio Haven for Outdoor Entertaining

Cream-Colored Patio Haven for Entertaining

This cream-colored patio was styled by Krystine Edwards of Living Pretty Styled. Her deck was badly in need of some love, and she used this as a chance to turn it into a spot for outdoor entertaining.

Take a look at how her new outdoor dining set, an outdoor rug and a planter-turned-cooler come together to create a patio haven.

Cream-Colored Patio Haven

Outdoor entertaining is one of my favorite things to do. We live in a part of the country where the weather is warm all year long. Most of our days and nights are spent outdoors. One thing I love to do is eat outside. So, I knew it was time to spruce up this outdoor space and make it a place for gatherings with family and friends.

Before the Patio Makeover

Backyard deck before its makeover

As you can see, this outdoor deck was long overdue for a makeover. It does not have a covered area, and the sun had been harsh on the old furniture, the rug and the entire deck. It needed a breath of fresh air and some new style.

An Outdoor Dining Space

Cream-Colored Patio Haven for Entertaining

First, I decided that I did not want it to be a lounge area but a dining area.

I chose the Hampton Bay Oak Cliff custom 7 piece in Oatmeal. The seats are large and comfy, it is sturdy and the perfect size for my deck.

I love Oatmeal color. It set the tone for the cream-colored patio that I had in mind.

Cream-Colored Patio Haven for Entertaining

The Outdoor Rug

Next, I was on to the accessorizing. I chose this Tayse Rugs Garden black and white rug because I love striped rugs for outdoor spaces. And, this one was amazing! It’s a soft rug and is beautiful.

Black and white stripes coordinated well with the cream-colored patio set.

String Lights

Cream-Colored Patio Haven for Entertaining

After the rug selection, I needed lighting, and I went with these party lights. I feel that lighting can change the dynamic of any space. Outdoor lighting, especially string lights, gives a fun, almost whimsical and charming feel.

These lights were easy to install and just perfect for my cream-colored patio.

Planter Repurposed as Cooler

Planter used as outdoor beverage cooler

Now that I had the mood set, I needed a cooler for my space. I didn’t want go with a metal one because, unfortunately, living here on the coast they don’t always last long.

I saw this planter and realized that this would be the best for outdoor dinners. It is so great! It has a plug in it to make it easy to drain. The shelf underneath is great for storage and easily removable to drain the melted ice.

Greenery

Cream-Colored Patio Haven for Entertaining

What this deck lacked was a greenery. I had to fill this space with colorful and tall plants. And, I cannot tell you enough how much I LOVE these Home Decorators quatrefoil planters. They’re so chic! They’re solid, they’re a fun shape and they are beautiful in person. I plan on buying many more for our front porch as well.

The Patio Umbrella

Cream-Colored Patio Haven for Entertaining

Now that I have the entire deck set, I needed on crucial item: an umbrella to protect us from the sun. The sun on that space is so harsh and it’s so hard to enjoy the space.

This umbrella is AMAZING! I have always wanted one, and this Hampton 11 ft. umbrella is perfect! Not only does it cover almost the entire deck, it also has LED lights in it for additional lighting in the evening. Isn’t that awesome?

A Patio Ready for Entertaining

The deck is ready, and dinner al fresco is on its way! Well, almost on its way because we had some party crashers who absolutely LOVED the new outdoor dining area. They laughed, drank their lemonade and enjoyed some snacks.

The Tablescape

When putting together a dining space, especially a tablescape, it’s all about the details.

Outdoor dining tablescape

I set the table with my favorite plates, cups, bowls and coasters. I continued with the black and white theme and added color with plants and food. It was the perfect finishing touch on this now wonderful space.

We shared dinner on the new deck with our friends and enjoyed what will now be a fun space for gathering with family and friends for years to come!

Patio Privacy Makeover with Pergola

Patio Privacy Makeover with Pergola

Courtney Clymer of Lifestyled Atlanta liked her patio, but it was time for some improvements, especially in the area of patio privacy.

She added a lovely privacy screen, along with a new pergola, and a new patio set, and the space is transformed.

Patio Privacy Makeover with Pergola

A functional and pretty outdoor space is so important to me, especially living in Georgia where we have beautiful weather most months of the year. You’ll remember that awhile ago we did a major patio makeover. While we loved the curtains and the lights above, the copper structure started to seem a bit too small and minimal for the size of our patio.

After brainstorming some inspiration ideas, we decided to build a DIY pergola for something more substantial and permanent feeling.

New Patio Furniture

I also really wanted some additional seating options, so I was thrilled when The Home Depot sent us this Hampton Bay Redwood Valley 5-Piece Patio Set with a fire pit in the middle!

I love everything about it; the seats are so comfortable, each person gets their own space, and the fire pit is a great addition. Plus, you can use it as an oversized table when you don’t have a fire going. That allows ample space for drinks, appetizers, dishes and more. We have both the red and gray cushions and plan to switch them out seasonally.

Patio Privacy Makeover with Pergola

The Patio Privacy Wall

We love our neighbors, but everyone can use a little privacy. So, we decided to build a slatted privacy wall on one side of the patio, which we plan to fill with potted herbs and spices. For now it adds a nice little privacy aspect while also giving some additional interest to the pergola.

My husband Harrison came up with the barn-style “x” railings, and I absolutely LOVE how they turned out. He always impresses me so much with what he’s able to envision and then bring to life, and this patio railing is out of my dreams. Not to mention, you can set a cocktail down on the top of the railing!

Patio Privacy Makeover with Pergola

The copper post lights are solar and light up each night. They add a great ambiance, and I love how elegant the copper looks against the white.

The Deck Flooring and Planters

Patio Privacy Makeover with Pergola

We still have our deck flooring, which has held up so well and we absolutely LOVE.

You can look back at the tutorial HERE.

These chippendale planters are so pretty and the perfect size.

Patio Accessories

For the pillows, I combined ikat, stripes and plain blue.

We also swapped out our old lighting for this barn light which I love against the white brick.

Another essential to an outdoor entertaining space? A drink caddy. I love this galvanized metal tub that we’ve actually converted into a flower pot for the times we’re not entertaining and serving drinks out of it.

Patio Privacy Makeover with Pergola

I am all about a great garden stool and I love the detailing on these garden stools. I have them in between each seat so people can pull them up for extra seating, prop their feet up or set a drink down. We have already had many fun spring mornings and nights out here, and can’t wait to continue!

On her blog, Lifestyled Atlanta, wardrobe stylist, blogger, and interior designer Courtney Clymer covers an array of topics, from fashion, to interiors and more. Courtney and her husband work as a team at their company, Mimosa Design Co., helping couples renovate, remodel and generally fix up their homes.
