Choose the Right Rug Size for Any Room

When shopping for a rug, there are a few things you need to consider. Before you figure out what design and color you want, make sure you know the right rug size and shape for your room. Area rugs are more than just another way to show off your sense of style; rugs protect your floors, reduce noise and add a level of comfort to every room. But if you don’t have the appropriate size rug for your room, you’re likely to be disappointed with your purchase.

Mohawk Flooring, known for its beautiful and high quality rugs, offers these tips for choosing the right rug size for your room.

Getting the Right Size Rug for Your Room

Choosing the Right Rug Size for Your Living Room

Living Room/Great Room

To make the most of your living or great room space, you can:

  • Use the size of your rug to help determine the grouping of furniture, especially for less intuitive spaces like a studio apartment or an open-concept home.
  • Ensure your rug doesn’t touch your baseboards. Typically 12-18 inches of exposed flooring around your rug is ideal.

How to Choose the Right Size Rug for Your Dining Room

Dining Room

A dining room rug can make all the difference. Follow these tips to get the perfect look.

  • The rug under your dining room table should extend just beyond the chairs, when they’re in the pulled out position.
  • To find out what rug size you need, pull out the chairs as you normally would when you sit around your table. Then, measure the length and width around the pulled out chairs, adding 8 inches to the measurements to get an idea of the minimum-size rug you need for that space.

How to Choose the Right Size Rug for Your Bedroom

Bedroom

There are many ways to use rugs in your bedroom to add both style and comfort. When you’re shopping for a rug, keep these tips in mind.

  • If you’re placing a large plush rug under your bed, be aware the bed will cover most of the pattern when you’re picking out the design of your rug.
  • If you decide to go with one large rug, make sure there is an additional 3 feet of rug on both sides of your bed (along the longer sides).
  • If you’re using smaller accent rugs, achieve balance by placing one at the foot of your bed and one or two coordinating rugs on each side of your bed.

How to Choose the Right Size Rug for Your Hallway

Hallways, Entry Ways and Other Narrow Places

Not sure how to dress these areas? Follow these simple rules.

  • Long, narrow runner rugs are ideal for smaller areas in your home.
  • When using a runner rug, be sure to leave 18 to 36 inches of exposed floor on both sides of the rug.
  • In areas where a door may swing over your rug (like a hallway), measure the height of your door so it can easily pass over the rug.

Those are the tips you need to find the right rug size for your room. The hard part is over! Now just find the perfect texture and color, and you’ll be on your way.
