DIY Wall Mounted Black Pipe Lamp

This wall-mounted black pipe lamp is uncommonly attractive, with a sophisticated industrial look. It even has a touch dimmer, which controls the brightness of the light with just a touch.

This eye-catching iron pipe lamp was created by Ben Uyeda of HomeMade Modern using materials in a pipe decor kit available from The Home Depot, along with other items from The Home Depot’s aisles.

DIY Black Pipe Lamp

This DIY black pipe lamp has a touch dimmer and is made entirely from materials from The Home Depot. This project is a demonstration of how to design your own lamp, but all electrical tasks should be performed by a professional electrician.

Materials

½ in. diameter pipes

• 12 in. pipes x 3
• 10 in. pipes x 1
• 4 in. pipes x 3
• 2 in. pipes x 4
• 24 in. pipes x 1

1 in. diameter pipes

• 2 in. pipes x 2
• 4 in. pipes x 1

Other materials

• ½ in. Flanges x 2
• ½ in. T-Fittings x 4
• ½ in. straight couplings x 2
• ½ in. plugs x 2
• ½ in. end caps x 1
• ½ in. to 1 in. reducer couplings x 3
• 1 in. to 1-¼ in. reducer couplings x 3
• ½ in. 5-way fitting (from LDR Pipe Décor Kit)
• Cree LED Light bulbs
• Westek touch dimmer
• Cord and socket set

Step 1: Lay out the pipes

I started by laying out all the pieces of pipe on the floor. My design started with a 5-way fitting that I got out of one of the LDR Pipe Décor Paper Towel Kit. The challenge for making pipe lamps is in threading the wires through the pipes without them getting bunched up.

It is possible to thread the wires through before assembling the pipes but then you risk twisting the wires and breaking your wire connections. I assemble straight pieces of pipe together and then thread the wires through before assembling the last few pieces of pipe. Using thin “pull wires” to snake through the pipes and create a hook that can pull the electrical wires through is also an option.

Step 2: Connect the wires

Working with electricity can be dangerous, and all electrical connections should be made by a professional electrician.

Step 3: Assemble

Once I connected the wires, I screwed together the final pieces of pipe. The wires were a bit too long, but I used the large diameter pipes right below the sockets to store the excess length of wire.

I screwed Cree LED light bulbs into the candelabra sockets. I used CREE bulbs because I like the light quality and they fit nicely into the pipe fittings.

Step 4: Find the studs in the wall

I used my stud finder to locate the 2 x 4s behind the gypsum board. This lamp is quite heavy and I wanted to make sure I was screwing it to the structure in the wall not just to the gypsum board.

I screwed through the holes in the floor flange fittings through the gypsum board and into the wall studs.

Step 5: Add a touch dimmer

I added a plug-in touch dimmer between the light and the wall socket. It just plugs right in and lets you control the brightness of the lamp by tapping any metal part of the lamp.
