Transform Your Bathroom With Peel and Stick Backsplash

I’m happy to be back today showing you the second part of our bathroom makeover! You can check out the first part right here on The Home Depot Blog! I must say I didn’t know how much of a difference adding peel and stick backsplash tiles to this space would change it. But what surprised me even more was the easy application of the peel and stick Smart Tiles!

Peel and Stick Backsplash Tiles

Smart Tiles are made of an “adhesive substrate topped with a gel component called Gel-O (which gives it its 3-D effect).” Smart Tiles guarantees that their product will stick without adding extra glue and will never yellow or crack with time. The tiles are lightweight, easy to handle, cut and maintain, and they will remain on your walls for as long as you wish them to be!

With just a few easy steps, you can transform a backsplash or a wall like this in a few hours! For this space, I chose the Metro Grigio peel and stick backsplash. A medium gray color that mimics a 2 x 4 subway tile with gray grout. They have so many beautiful choices to choose from so I did have a hard time narrowing it down! My favorites are the Metro Blanco, and the Metro Carrera!

Smart Tiles come in a box just like this with simple instructions.

Materials

Step 1: Clean the Walls

Before you apply the tiles make sure the walls are clean and free of any noticeable uneven bumps.

Step 2: Level the Tiles

Next use a level and trace a guide to make sure the tiles align correctly during the duration of the installation.

Step 3: Use a Template

Before any cuts were made I peeled the back of one tile and used it as a template. I marked where I needed to cut and reported it back to the tile. This works great especially when you have tight corners or harder cuts. So as you go, save the backs and you can continue to use them as templates when it’s time to cut!

Step 4: Peel the Tiles

Before you put the tile on the wall wipe off any material that may have come off the cuts.

Now peel off the back and align the adhesive portion with your guideline then apply a light pressure. Smooth out any bumps or air bubble that might form. But most importantly make sure that it’s straight. If you find that it’s not then quickly remove it and reapply to adjust.

Once you get on a roll you will be on your way! Keep checking to see if things are level along the way.

In order to line up the subway tiles if you are applying the Metro collection, you will overlap the tiles. Each tile collection has its own installation guidelines, so make sure to check!

Q & A on Peel and Stick Backsplash Tiles

I showed my readers the installation on my Instagram stories and they were so excited to see it in action! Here are a few questions they had that I think you might want to know too!

Can you see the seams?

Only if you look super close you can, but when you just look at them it takes a bit to find them. To hide them, I ran my finger over them to adhere them very well.

Can you use them in the shower?

No, but you can use them near the shower just like I did! The Smart Tiles website explains this a bit more.

How does it feel?

Great question! It feels like it has some texture to it. It’s not a hard tile feel but it you can certainly feel the difference between Smart Tiles and something like wallpaper that has no dimension.

How do you cut around the corners and outlets?

It’s actually pretty easy. Just make a template and use your box cutter to get the most accurate cuts. Use a ruler or straight edge as your guide and press the box cutter firmly into the tile and make a sharp cut.
