Home Decor Style Swap: Modern Farmhouse Living Room

This modern farmhouse living room is the result of home decor style swap we set up between two of our favorite design bloggers, Lesley Graham of Lesley W Graham and Anna Liesemeyer of In Honor of Design.

Lesley helped set up the dining room in Anna’s new house, and Anna gave Lesley’s living room a makeover, all featuring new furnishings and decor pieces from Home Decorator’s Collection.

We also asked the two bloggers to describe their collaborations. Here, Anna explains how she helped create this lovely modern farmhouse living room for Lesley.

Creating a Modern Farmhouse Living Room

Handing over a room design to a friend can be quite intimidating! Thankfully, for this Home Decor Style Swap, I was paired up with one my most style savvy friends, Lesley Graham. It was so nice to have some fresh perspective in my own dining room space, as well as working with her on dreaming up her modern farmhouse living room. Together we were able to execute a really fun space!

Here are all the details we used from Home Decorators Collection, as well as before and after reveal photos on how we achieved this modern farmhouse living room…

Process

The first step in swapping spaces was establishing our goal for the room. Lesley expressed to me that she wanted to get rid of their hodgepodge of items, and work towards a space that felt more cohesive. She was aiming for a clean and sophisticated room that her family could enjoy.

Since her little ones are growing up, she knew she could finally go for that light neutral color palette!

We shared Pinterest boards as well, where we posted our inspiration images and ideas, which helped us gather an overall vision from the colors and visuals shared.

Lesley chose the Gordon Tufted Sofa in Natural Linen, Old Grey Treasures Rug, and Bentley Chairs as the main foundational pieces of the room. This established the tone for the rest of the room, and the decisions for details and statement pieces came easy after that!

Personal Elements

We also wanted to incorporate some personal family elements so the room still felt like home.

Guitars her husband plays, family pictures, and art from her favorite artists were a few ways we did that.

Do It Yourself!

What really brightened the space was the DIY shiplap wall Lesley’s husband and dad tackled together. It really brought the modern farmhouse feel. Painting it in a true white (Polar Bear Exterior by Behr Paint) lifted a ton of shadow from the room and reflected the natural light that the windows provide.

Custom shelving units were also installed and painted in the same color to offer a place to house those little personal details such as picture frames.

Statement Pieces

To draw the eye to the center of the room and tie it all together was the wooden beaded Ellencot Chandelier and arched wall mirrors.

You don’t need a ton of pieces in the space to make a dramatic improvement. It just takes a few of the right pieces to connect the look and feel you are going for.

Home Decor Style Swap: A Family-Friendly Dining Room

Sometimes even talented designers can benefit from a fresh look when decorating their own homes. That’s the idea behind this family-friendly dining room, part of a home decor style swap we set up between two of our favorite design bloggers, Lesley Graham of Lesley W Graham and Anna Liesemeyer of In Honor of Design.

They each collaborated on decorating one room in each others’ homes. Lesley helped set up the dining room in Anna’s new house, and Anna gave Lesley’s living room a makeover, all featuring new furnishings and decor pieces from Home Decorator’s Collection.

Family-Friendly Dining Room

I adore Anna’s taste, so it was really fun to get her input on our living room. And I loved helping her fine tune the look of her gorgeous dining room that she really wanted to be the family hub of their home.

Here’s a look at how her family-friendly dining room came together!

Anna and her family had literally just moved into their beautiful new home when we started the project, so think blank canvas with builder beige walls. She wanted to transform the space by bringing in functional pieces that were stylish and kid friendly for their family of five (almost six!!).

One of the first things we talked about was the “feel” she was going for in the space. We both created shared Pinterest boards (see hers here!) to pin inspiration and elements for the space. She really wanted this Old World, Spanish, European vibe, and the room had to be suitable for the whole family. So we got to work on bringing that to life!

Paint and Window Treatments

For the bones of the room, Anna wanted a fresh coat of light paint and a cool wall feature. She introduced me to wall artist Emily Harris, who completely transformed the back wall with exposed brick and plaster for that Old World feel. The rest of the walls were lightened up with “Dove” by Home Decorators Collection for BEHR. Gorgeous, huh?!

The windows also got updated with these white faux wood blinds. I love window treatments that are functional and easy on the eyes!

Dining Table and Buffet

Next we brought in the foundation pieces that Anna chose! The Highland Dining Table is this gorgeous sand blasted table with traditional legs that has lots of seating (perfect for their precious growing family!!). The muted tones are so versatile and can really work with any style.

She also chose the metal Garden Side Chairs. These chairs brought a touch of industrial to the space and they are indestructible. Perfect for little ones!!

Lastly, she had this little nook that she wanted to tie into the space and make functional so she chose this pretty Oxford Buffet that also has amazing storage!

Lighting and Area Rug

Then the fun part for me! Anna told me she wanted a coffee bar for the buffet and a family-friendly rug and pendants that would work for her vaulted ceilings.

Anna has amazing style, and I wanted this room to reflect that. Because she was going for family-friendly for the rug, we actually switched gears from doing a more traditional rug to this neutral Seascape Rug. It works with just about any style and can be beat up a bit without anyone noticing.

For the lighting, I really wanted to tie the buffet space to the dining space to make the look cohesive. These industrial pendants are clean + modern and keep the look airy with the glass.

I repeated them over the buffet and then Anna’s talented husband put together an incredible DIY fixture using pipe for two of the pendants to work with their tall, vaulted ceiling over their table. I love the way it turned out.

The Coffee Bar

When working with the buffet I tried to think of all of the elements you might need for a coffee bar. I love metallics and mixing metals, so I thought it would be fun to incorporate some copper into the space.

This Copper Cabinet basket is great for fruit, coffee mugs or pastries, and the silverware caddy plays host to everything you would need to serve your family. The storage of the buffet is perfect for linens, dinnerware, flatware and anything else you would need to host!

Anna loves a little bit of quirk to keep style fun, and I fell in love with this little pineapple jar that you could use for sugar or matches or anything really.

I also can’t get enough marble in my life, and knew Anna would feel the same, so we added these stunning marble bowls for a little glamour. They’re perfect for nuts or oatmeal toppings in the morning.

Of course you need accessories for coffee so I brought in these pretty mugs and espresso spoons!

The final touch for the buffet was greenery!

Anna and I both love adding natural elements to a space to bring it to life, so we brought in this Fiddle Leaf Fig and Rubber plant for the buffet area, and who can resist a succulent? :)

Setting the table is always fun, and I wanted the final look to feel really special.

These wooden candle holders go incredibly well with the sand blast finish of the Highland Dining Table. I love candles grouped together in a mass. So romantic for date nights in!

We reused Anna’s seagrass placemats that she already owned as well as her plates to personalize the space and make it feel like them.

I love the look of this terrarium paired with this chunky and glorious lazy Susan as a center piece, so I layered it in with the candle holders and some faux greenery.

To add even more greenery we brought in this Delray palm.

An Old World-Style Dining Room

The end result is stylish, family-friendly and Spanish/European, which is what Anna really wanted for the space.

Having open communication throughout the process made me feel confident because I knew Anna was on board with my choices. It was such a fun project to get to do together.

Dry Erase Picture Frame Station

In this DIY project, Rust-Oleum shows you how to transform a mud room into a clean, well organized space that can be used for any purpose.

Utilizing empty wall space, you can create a fun, decorative communication station with Rust-Oleum Dry Erase paint.

Follow the how-to below.

Creating the Dry Erase Station

Materials

• Rust-Oleum Specialty Dry Erase Kit
• Picture Frame
• Foam Roller
• Paint Tray
• Level
• Paint Stir Stick
• Painter’s Tape
• Drop Cloth
• Pencil

Step 1: Clean and Trace

Locate the best portion of your wall to create your communication station. Clean all surfaces thoroughly with soap and water, then rinse and let it dry. Our dry erase areas will be displayed inside old and new frames. For this project, we used four larger frames.

To measure, simply take a frame and trace the interior portion using a pencil. We recommend using a level to ensure you are straight. Do this for each frame.

Step 2: Tape

After tracing the inside of the picture frame, add painter’s tape to the outside edge of your traced lines to keep things clean while painting.

TIP: Prime dark surfaces prior to application of the dry erase paint.

Step 3: Pour and Mix the Dry Erase Paint

After you’ve finished taping, you are ready to paint. Working in a well ventilated area, spread a drop cloth out to protect from possible spills.

First, stir Part A and Part B separately. Then, pour Part A Activator into Part B Base.

Stir components together with a stir stick until the paint is uniform in color (about two minutes). Begin painting immediately.

TIP: Apply activated dry erase paint within 60 minutes of mixing.

Step 4: Paint and Dry

You’re ready to apply the dry erase paint to the marked areas of your wall. Take your high quality foam roller and start rolling dry erase paint until the area is covered. Use light, even strokes to ensure a smooth finish.

Wait 10-15 minutes then apply a second coat. Repeat a third time on darker surfaces. After 1 hour, remove the painter’s tape that was used to mask the area.

Allow the dry erase surface to cure for three days before applying any markings. Hang your frames over the painted dry erase areas and begin to enjoy your new communication surface!

To maintain your surface, use dry erase cleaner to remove any markings that might remain following erasing.

To further enhance our mudroom makeover, we coated the mudroom floor with RockSolid Metallic Concrete Floor Coating in Silver Bullet and painted our frames and wire baskets in Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover 2x in Satin Fire Orange and Stone Gray Satin.

Style Swap: Room Makeovers by Lesley Graham and Anna Liesemeyer

When bloggers Anna Liesemeyer and Lesley Graham decided their rooms needed a new look, they took a leap of faith and gave each other’s spaces stylish room makeovers with furniture and décor from The Home Depot’s Home Decorators Collection. It was two talented designers with individual styles turning parts of their homes over to another designer– a living room makeover for a dining room makeover.

Two Room Makeovers for Two Designers

Lesley’s Living Room Before the Transformation

Lesley’s living room showcased her playful, eclectic style with vintage pieces, bold patterns, and bright colors, but the busy blogger and mother of two was craving a calmer space with a more focused aesthetic. Anna was more than happy to take on the challenge.

Lesley’s Living Room Makeover

To anchor Lesley’s new living room, Anna replaced the vintage couch with the Gordon Tufted Sofa in Natural Linen. The classic shape and neutral tone brought an instant sense of calm and a stylish focal point to Lesley’s space.

Once Anna established the room’s signature piece, she replaced Lesley’s vintage chair with a complementary Milton Polyester Arm Chair and chose the Anjou Coffee Table to ground the room with its simple lines and rustic materials.

Continuing with the neutral color palette, Anna selected the Home Decorators Collection’s antique-inspired Old Treasures Gray Rug to tie the room together.

Anna added contrast to the soft, neutral fabrics with a set of Hammered Aluminum Bowls and a gold-brushed Bella Glass End Table.

To bring a pop of color to the room, she selected several throw pillows in complementary cool and warm tones.

Lesley was thrilled with her living room makeover.

The new space is a great fit for the blogger’s home: sophisticated enough for entertaining, functional enough for everyday, while still expressive of her fun, eclectic sense of style.

 Anna’s Dining Room Before the Transformation

Anna recently moved into a new home to accommodate her growing family. Her simple décor worked well in her previous house, but with a new open dining area, her space felt a little sparse.

Luckily, Lesley had some great ideas on how to add style and balance to her challenging floorplan.

Anna’s Dining Room Makeover

Lesley chose the Highland Dining Room Table for its generous size, classic lines, and rustic texture. It’s big enough to comfortably accommodate Anna’s family of six.

Anna paired the wooden table with metallic Garden Side Chairs for a modern contrast.

To finish the look, she selected a Downing Terrarium centerpiece, a perfect fit for Anna’s desert chic sense of style.

To differentiate the dining room area from the rest of her open floor plan, Lesley chose a natural fiber Penley II Harvest Khaki Rug from Home Decorators Collection.

Lesley replaced Anna’s existing lighting fixture with Polished Chrome Glass Pendant Lights to give Anna’s space a touch of industrial charm.

Lesley chose a substantial Oxford Buffet table to fill out Anna’s window nook. The versatile piece of furniture can serve as an everyday coffee/ breakfast station or as a serving area for entertaining.
