Wooden Wonderland: DIY Front Porch Christmas Decor

DIY Front Porch Decor for Christmas

Sometimes the best front porch Christmas decor for Christmas is DIY front porch Christmas decor.

Aniko Levai of Place of My Taste went all out decorating her front yard for the holidays. She called it her “wooden wonderland.” She created this holiday look especially for the Holiday Style Challenge here on The Home Depot Blog.

Take a look at how she mixed DIY elements with holiday decorations she received from The Home Depot. And check out Aniko’s super easy DIY decorations that would look terrific in front of your own home.

I was thrilled to be picked as one of the Holiday Style Challenge makers this year for The Home Depot. I love this time of the year, and I always look forward to dressing up my home for the season! I particularly like challenges when I have to put my spin and style on projects. It’s a fun way to explore my décor ideas and it always makes me come up with the best ideas.

Aniko Levai of Place of My Taste receives boxes of Christmas decorations from The Home Depot

I got a whole bunch of goodies from The Home Depot, and I anxiously got to opening all of these boxes I received back in October. It was excited to see that I got some awesome Christmas decorations to dress up my front porch. I always pay more attention to the inside of my home, so I was delighted to see all the goodies I have received. I am gravitating towards the boho-eclectic and neutral look inside of my home, so I instantly pictured wooden elements on my front porch and some fun cut-out wooden Christmas trees.

Below is the finished decorated front porch, and I will tell you in details how I created this look with a few simple DIY projects and adding some impressive décor pieces from The Home Depot.

I love the balanced look when it comes to front porch décor. It makes everything look nice and clean even from a distance.

I got a gorgeous large pre-lit 32 in. woodland tales artificial Christmas wreath, and my instant vision was to add the stained crossbars to the back of the wreath.

Adding the crossbars to the back of my large door wreath was a super easy step that you can totally tackle yourself, and it gives some drama to the already beautiful Christmas wreath.

I purchased several lattice pieces from The Home Depot and stained them with Dark Walnut Minwax stain (my favorite stain color).

After they were completely dry, I secured them to the back of the wreath by pushing them through the wire frame and stapling or nailing the wooden pieces together.

I used the same fabulous idea for six smaller wreaths as well, and I hung those wreaths to the outside of my windows. For the smaller wreaths I used simple paint sticks which perfectly fit the inside of my 12 in. wreaths.

Then to add a little more drama to my décor, I decided to cut out two 18 in. Christmas tree shapes out of a wooden underlayment sheet, and I stained them.

I drilled a small hole on the top of the trees to hang them with a piece of rope.

I arranged my large wreath on the front door, and I hung the two small trees on the sides of my door. I loved the look so much that I cut some more, larger, wooden Christmas tree shapes and placed them close to the rail.

I secured them by adding small hooks to the back of the trees, and I tighten them with fishing line to the rails.

To complete the look I placed my Winslow fur potted artificial Christmas trees that I received from The Home Depot into wooden barrels, and I decorated my trees with pinecones from the backyard. I got a few wooden present boxes to put on my steps, plus I added some firewood to complete the look.

Because I am crazy like that, I still did not think I had enough Christmas trees, so I cut some human sized trees out of ½ in. plywood and placed them in between my beautiful Christmas decorations on my front yard.

Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

Neutral colors and a subtle mix of simple textures are the hallmark of the farmhouse holiday decor in this master bedroom.

Hannah Hathaway of We Lived Happily Ever After styled this Christmas look for our Holiday Style Challenge here on The Home Depot Blog. We sent her a mystery box of Home Depot Christmas decorations, and she did the rest.

Hannah shares her tips for achieving this rustic farmhouse holiday decor in your home.

Farmhouse Holiday Decor

When decorating for Christmas, I like to stay very neutral and natural, opting for pine branches and vintage elements. I love for everything to look bright and cheery. Here are some of my tips to create some farmhouse holiday charm in your home, particularly in a master bedroom.

Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

The Color Scheme

One of my biggest tips for achieving a farmhouse holiday look is to stick with natural decor. Because of our white walls, and all the rustic wood furniture we have throughout our house, colors really pop. I like to take advantage of that by using neutrals and one or two bold colors. You just want to make sure not to use too many loud tones that compete against each other.

Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

One great way to achieve a coherent look around the room is to mix old textures with new ones, and spread out two to three main colors so there are consistent tones throughout the room.

Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

Also consider unconventional ways to display holiday objects like ornaments. Hang them on a string up against a window, or place them in a basket. Here you see Christmas ornaments from Martha Stewart Living’s Winter Tiding collection in a metal bin.

The Garland

Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

I am a huge lover of pines, so I love a good excuse to hang garlands of them in my house.

Here’s a little secret tip: I always mix real Christmas tree branches in with the pre-made garlands. It really brings them to life! Usually they will give you branches for free when you are purchasing a Christmas tree. I just tuck them in throughout the garland. Super easy, but it makes such a big difference!

And how cute are these little Christmas cars up against pine needles? I think I’m in love!

Textures

I love including meaningful heirloom items in decor, like this quilt my great grandmother made my for my wedding. It’s very personal, but it still has that eclectic feel.

Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

Incorporating glass elements next to garlands and rustic textures can look lovely. I chose to put my collection of blue bottles up next to the red cars on my mantel, and I think it really created a perfect subtle look.

Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

One of my favorite things to do when staging a space is creating layers to achieve a cozy feel. My husband thinks I am a pillow hoarder (and he is totally right!)

Artwork

Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

One nice thing with word art, is that is a subtle display that doesn’t scream “Holidays!” With some pallets and plywood we created this long sign and decorated it with one of my favorite Christmas carols! It’s a super easy DIY if you have a drill, a saw, and a can of paint laying around.

Subtle Details

Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

It’s all about the small details. That isn’t to say that you need a million little things going on. Quite the opposite! Just pick three or four delicate details you want to display in each room.

Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

You don’t want elements competing for attention, so place them in natural looking places, like a nightstand, a bench, or shelf.

Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

Overall, you just want to create one main focal area, and spread out the details throughout the rest of the space.

Wreaths

Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

Wreaths aren’t just for outdoors! I decided to put the Champagne Glitter wreathes from Martha Stewart Living on my closet and master bathroom doors. This is probably the easiest way to dress up a space.

Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

That’s it for now! Now go decorate your home, but above all, make it a space that is has a calming, happy vibe.

Elegant and Chic Christmas Mantel Makeover

Elegant and Chic Christmas Mantel Makeover

This Christmas mantel started with a mantel makeover.

Sara Davis of Sincerely, Sara D gave her mantel a fresh coat of paint and applied rustic, woodland-themed wallpaper to the adjoining wall. Then she completed the Christmas mantel decorations with holiday decor from The Home Depot.

Take a look at her chic Christmas mantel and pick up some ideas for your own fireplace mantel.

Elegant and Chic Christmas Mantel

When The Home Depot sent me items to design a Christmas mantel, the timing was perfect. We have lived in our home for three years, and I have been wanting to makeover the mantel for some time. This Style Challenge was just the push I needed to make it happen.

Elegant and Chic Christmas Mantel Makeover

Our fireplace has always bothered me because the mantel looks so disconnected and seems like an afterthought. I painted the entire fireplace (mantel and all) the same off-white color of our trim and made it match the rest of our home (all of our doors and trims are painted).

Zinnser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer

I lightly sanded the glossy varnish finish on the mantel and painted it with Zinnser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer.

Behr Marquee Paint

After the primer was dry, I used Behr Marquee paint that had been tinted to match our trim.

Grey Woods Peel and Stick Wallpaper

I stenciled the wall almost three years and was ready for a change. I love wallpaper  but not the commitment. I found this fun peel and stick wallpaper from NuWallpaper called Grey Woods which would look perfect for the upcoming winter months.

Elegant and Chic Christmas Mantel Makeover

Although it was an easy and fairly inexpensive makeover, it provided the room with an entirely new and fresh look.

Winterberry Artificial Garland

The Home Depot sent me boxes of beautiful Christmas decor to decorate my newly refreshed mantel.

I was sent two Winterberry Artificial Garlands from Martha Stewart Living and strung them across the mantel.

Winterberry Artificial Swags from Martha Stewart Living

The Winterberry Artificial Swags from Martha Stewart Living were hung from either end of the mantel.

White Wooden Holiday Lantern with LED Resin Timer Candle

On either side of the fireplace, I added these wooden holiday lanterns with timer candles.

DIY wooden sign for the Winterberry Artificial Wreath

I added our stockings and created a DIY wooden sign for the matching Winterberry Artificial Wreath.

Metal Christmas Countdown Calendar from Martha Stewart Living

I used this adorable Metal Christmas Countdown Calendar from Martha Stewart Living as a tray on the coffee table.

The stockings helped complete the look.

Command Hook holds a stocking on a Christmas mantel

I used Command hooks to hang the stockings.

Elegant and Chic Christmas Mantel Makeover

I added Martha Stewart Livings Warm White Copper Lights to the garland and wreath.

Elegant and Chic Christmas Mantel Makeover

I love the contrast of the red with the white fireplace and the decor looks great with the lights on or off. Either way, it makes a gorgeous statement.
