A Comfy Formal Sunroom Makeover

A Comfy Formal Sun Room Makeover

This formal sunroom makeover certainly is elegant, but scores high on comfort, too. What’s the point of having a lovely room that isn’t comfy?

In her sunroom makeover, Sandra Downie of The Rustic Life managed to hit that elegant-and-comfortable sweet spot by carefully choosing the furniture, rug, tables and accents. Let her take you on a tour of her new formal sunroom to inspire your own sunroom makeover.

Formal Sunroom Makeover

I’m waaaay excited to be partnering up once again with The Home Depot to reveal my formal sunroom makeover. Besides my office (which still needs a little work), the sunroom is probably the second room in our home where I spend the most time. If you want to see what the sunroom looked like before, check it out here. There are also lots more photos on my instagram page.

Although I did love how my sunroom was set up before, that design initially was not the vision I had for that room. When we moved in, the chair-and-a-half that was in the room was too big, so my idea of a mini “formal” sunroom was thwarted.

I was not happy to say the least. I had a vision, and I really wanted to finally pull the room together. I wanted it to serve both formally and informally for myself and guests. I wanted it to feel chic, but still comfortable. Some of you may think that would be hard, but it’s easier than you might think.

Start With the Walls

Peel-and-stick decals give distressed wood look to wall in formal sunroom

When working on a space I always try to start with the paint color. I would suggest you do the same if you are stuck and asking yourself “where do I begin”? This sets the tone and feel for what the space will eventually “feel” like.

I always want my home to feel comfortable, relaxed and inviting.

Instead of painting the wall, I decided to use decorative peel-and-stick wall decor. I chose a white washed wood peel-and-stick with varying tones. This added depth and texture without having to spend a ton of money OR time. The decal on the wall in half an hour. I immediately fell in love with how this simple wall decor transformed the space in such a little bit of time.

Centering the Room

Next, I looked for pieces that would center the sunroom. What I mean by that are the things that visually make an impact once you enter the room. I chose this darling linen nail head love seat and this vintage inspired grey rug.

Linen tufted love seat and vintage-inspired rug

Although there are speckles of yellow throughout the rug, I didn’t mind it as it is just a sweet element of surprise in my home’s neutral palette.

A Comfy Formal Sun Room Makeover

Furniture that has nail heads and tufted areas always elevates the space, giving the room an elegant and formal feel. With this love seat, as well, the two castor wheels on the front added an extra touch of craftsmanship to the piece. Simply elegant!

Accent Pieces

My next step was to decide on accent pieces: the side table and chairs.

Hand-carved wood arm chair

I knew because I wanted the room to also feel casual, I didn’t want to add any accent chairs that were upholstered. So I searched and searched and came across these hand-carved wood arm chairs. Um …  can you tell why I just had to have them?

Not only are they unique and quite frankly like pieces of art, but I LOVE how they brought more texture into the formal sunroom. The distressed rustic finish blends so nicely with the refined rustic farmhouse feel going on throughout my home. They are VERY well made and very comfy.

For the side tables I found another lovely piece at The Home Depot that had a white washed finish to it. It’s a very versatile side table that I think would be fitting in a home that is contemporary, eclectic and, of course, modern farmhouse.

The white washed wood top is solid and goes so nicely with the chairs and the distressed peel-and-stick accent wall. The shelf underneath allows for lots of storage options from baskets, to books, to stacking extra pillows. It’s perfect for a pillow addict such as myself.

White wash end table

Greenery for the Sunroom

As this IS a sunroom, so don’t you think it’s the ideal place to keep a pretty tropical palm nice and healthy? Heat and sun, how could it possibly die right? I think its a good choice for those of us with somewhat (not always) not-so-green thumbs.

A Comfy Formal Sun Room Makeover

I had this olive bucket that would make a great holder for the palm tree, and I have to say, it was the perfect finishing touch that corner needed. Now all I have to do is water it to keep it alive. I always said this sunroom needed some greenery/plants, and I’m glad I was able to work one in.

The Completed Formal Sunroom

To sum this formal sunroom project up, I would have to say that it came out, truthfully, even better than I had imagined. My hubby came home the night I finished styling it and was like, “Sandra, the sunroom looks really good. You did a great job!” My hubby isn’t a man of many words, but that made my heart smile.

We have enjoyed a glass of wine and talking by candlelight there the other night, and we can’t wait to have people over to enjoy it with us.

One last and KEY design tip I have for you all when you are trying to figure out how to pull a room together: Ask yourself questions and know the answers. Q an A’s such as will it be used everyday: Will kids be in the space? How much storage will I need? These are questions that will surely help to guide you.

Vintage Meets Modern Entryway Makeover

Vintage Meets Modern Entryway Makeover

This entryway makeover balances old and new, and functional and fun. It looks polished and elegant without being stuffy.

Mandi Gubler of Vintage Revivals, who couldn’t be stuffy if you paid her, styled this old-and-new entryway. She started with a favorite vintage piece she owned as the centerpiece. Mandi worked out from there using some of her new favorite decor items from The Home Depot.

Vintage Meets Modern Entryway Makeover

We all know and love The Home Depot for well, everything, but if you can believe it, that burning love is going to turn into a wildfire of stalker-like obsession. We all know The Home Depot has wood, and tools, and hardware, and paint, and plants. But don’t forget to to add decor to that list. They have more home decorating items than ever before, and you’re not going to believe how good it is.

Check out how much I leaned on The Home Depot in this entryway makeover.

We moved out of our house in January and into the in-laws’ basement, which let’s be honest, is not the most inspiring. When The Home Depot reached out about styling a space with some of my favorite pieces, I couldn’t shout yes loud enough. My adorable sister-in-law Lindsay’s entryway is the lucky space.

Mixing Vintage and New

Vintage Meets Modern Entryway Makeover

One way to create a well-balanced aesthetic in your home is to mix vintage and new. It’s one of my absolute favorite ways to fill my house with personality. The secret is to find a vintage showstopper and sprinkle in the new.

Vintage Meets Modern Entryway Makeover

Every time I go to my storage unit, my heart breaks a little for the pieces that are just sitting in there.

I know. That’s a little dramatic. But when that rolling door opens, and I see all of my favorite things just sitting there collecting dust, I want to lovingly console each of them. After looking at Lindsay’s entryway, I knew that it was the perfect spot for my card catalog. (You can see how it started out here, but consider yourself warned. If furniture abuse is a trigger, you might not want to click that link)

Once I knew what the star of this entryway refresh was going to be, I went to homedepot.com and got to work.

Guys. There are so many good things. I just can’t even express, you’ve got to go and check it out for yourself!

The Windsor Chair

Metal Windsor Chair

I started by adding the white metal Windsor-style chair (how great is it that it’s metal?! Classic style, easy modern finish.)

The Rug

Off white cotton area rug

Can we just have a moment of silence for the area rug? It’s 100 percent cotton, so it’s soft, and the weave gives it a kind of vintage look that I love. Could I have designed better rug for my old and new entryway makeover? Uh, no!

The Iron Framed Mirror

Iron round framed mirror

Seeing as how leather is my love language, there was no way I could resist this round iron framed mirror with the cool leather strap hanger. I am obsessed with the little yellow accent stitches, sometimes it really is the small things guys.

A Basket for Shoes

Large rustic woven basket

It was really important for the space to be as functional as possible, and one of the must haves is a large rustic basket for shoes. The basket that I used is natural but is also extremely heavy duty (you know how sometimes wicker or rattan falls apart after a short time of heavy shoes being flung inside?) I was pleasantly surprised at how durable this rustic-looking basket is.

White Floating Shelf

Contemporary floating shelf with silk tree and vintage camera

You guys know I love a good shelf build, but sometimes it’s really wonderful to just buy one. The 24 in. white floating shelf that I used is in stock at your local Home Depot store all the time!

I added a faux olive tree, simple black framed art, and an old camera to liven up the gigantor wall.

The Vintage and Modern Entryway

Now tell me how you’re feeling, can you believe all of those treasures came from our favorite orange store!?

DIY Pallet Dog Bed on Casters

DIY Pallet Dog Bed on Casters

This DIY pallet dog bed is cute as can be and quite practical. It’s a surprisingly easy DIY project by Rachel Metz of Living to DIY.

All you’ll need is a wooden pallet, some basic tools and materials, and a few hours of DIY time. Just follow Rachel’s step-by-step instructions. Your pet will be thrilled!

DIY Pallet Dog Bed

For all my humans who work in their garage like I do and have a dog who loves being right by your side, you know how much a cozy space is needed for them. I’m sure you’ve also felt the pain of being in the middle of a project then tripping over them and getting the look of “how could you!”  Well do not fret! Not only is this dog bed easy to make but it’s also easy to move! That’s right! It’s up on wheels so you can maneuver your pet out of your work way without feeling so bad.

My constant goal is to execute DIYs that anyone that any skill level can do and this is no different. You can get as intensely detailed as you want or do the simple steps below but regardless, this is the perfect bed for your best bud. My baby girl flipped out when this bed was all done and I know yours will love it too!

Tools and materials needed to make this pallet dog bed

Tools

Materials

Optional add-on’s:

Step 1: Measure Your Pallet to Fit Your Dog

DIY Pallet Dog Bed on Casters

I started off by making my mark of where I wanted to cut my pallet. There won’t be exact measurements since everyone’s pet size varies. I literally put my English bulldog on it to measure it!

The smaller portion will be used for the headboard.

Step 2: Cut the Pallet

Then I cut the pallet.

Please note that I am a new to this power tool world, so bare with me as I execute this DIY the way that worked for me. If you don’t have power tools, where there’s a will there’s a DIY way! (Plus, you can easily rent tools from The Home Depot.)

I used my reciprocating saw and cut where I made my mark.

Step 3: Sand the Pallet Wood

Sanding a DIY dog bed made from a wooden pallet

After cutting the pallet, I grabbed my cordless orbit sander and started with an 80 Grit paper then finished it off with a 120 Grit to ensure there wasn’t anything that would hurt my pup when she lays down.

Step 4 (Optional): Personalize the Headboard

Personalizing the headboard of a DIY dog bed

This is totally optional, but I wanted to add a personal touch, so I went ahead and painted her name to the headboard before moving onto attaching the pieces together.

Step 5: Screw the Headboard Pieces Together

Tip: make sure you have the proper wood screw length on hand! I realized I didn’t have the screws that were long enough to go through the original depth of the board on the back of the headboard so I had to figure out a solution. I didn’t have the proper power tool on hand to cut it so I went back to my reciprocating saw and just used that to cut it down.

Step 6: Attach the Headboard to the Dog Bed

I propped the headboard up as it would normally go, then screwed in my wood screws through each support beam on the back of the bed.

Step 7: Cut Side Pieces

Measuring for the sides of a DIY dog bed made from a wooden pallet

Since I had extra pallet pieces, I put them up along the side where couch arms would go. Then I marked, cut and sanded them.

Step 8: Glue and Screw the Side Pieces

I added some Gorilla Glue for extra security since my pup is forty pounds of pure muscle.

Screw in screws through the back of the headboard piece into the arm.

Step 9: Attach Corner Braces

Step 10: Attach Casters

Flip your pallet dog bed over and screw in one wheel to each corner.

Step 11: Add a Blanket or Dog Mattress

Throw a blanket or mattress on top and you’re done!

Want to add some storage? It’s easy to find bins that fit right in those pallet slots!

I love how this pallet dog bed turned out. The best part: I’m able to keep her by my side when she’s sleeping since I can move her with me without waking her up. Happy dog, happy life right?

Modern, Eclectic Patio That is Perfect for Entertaining

Cecilia Moyer writes the blog Nina and Cecilia with her twin sister. As you will soon find out, unlike her sister, Cecilia favors modern, eclectic decor. It’s no wonder, then, that she created a modern, eclectic patio for our Patio Style Challenge series.

A Modern, Eclectic Patio for Entertaining

I have a blog that I share with my twin sister, Niña, but just because we look alike doesn’t mean we have similar tastes. I have a modern, eclectic style, and she has a coastal farmhouse style. We wanted to show you how you can entertain in your backyard patio space with two different styles! We decorated and styled the same dining set, the Hampton Bay Lemon Grove 7 piece set, in both of our homes. If you all haven’t seen Niña’s country living dinner party from yesterday, please go check it out! Here, I give you a glimpse of some backyard patio ideas and my vision of an outdoor family breakfast on a modern, eclectic patio.

My husband and I moved into our home about two years ago. We call it our “builder grade to modern home.” We’ve done numerous updates to it inside, but this was our first big outdoor backyard project. I was excited to have an extra patio area in the backyard since the area in our deck is a pretty small space for our family of six.

Expanding the Patio Space

The first step in expanding our patio area was removing the sod to make a place for paver stones.

I am so thankful that my husband and father-in-law were able to help with this project! Once they were done with that, they laid patio pavers.

I decided to go with Pavestone 16 x1 6 Concrete Step Stone in Pewter. We used 90 stones total.

DIY Outdoor Rug

To keep budget down for our backyard patio area, I decided to do a DIY outdoor rug using a canvas drop cloth. I used painter’s tape to outline the linear design for the rug.

I love how the DIY modern outdoor rug turned out!!

Patio Extras

I couldn’t wait to use the Hampton Bay Ceramic Lanterns in the color Chalk. It has the geometric design that was perfect for my backyard patio space. I put two 6½-in. and two 8½-in. ceramic lanterns down the steps leading to the patio area.

I wanted some areas where the kids could hang out. My kids love teepees and tents so I put in a space for them to “hide” with their stuffed animals. Another fun idea for the kids was a tic-tac-toe spot to keep them busy until it’s time to eat!

I placed the tic-tac-toe game on top of the Hampton Bay Metallic Diamond Outdoor Pouf. This outdoor pouf is so versatile. It has a handle, which makes it easy to carry. You can use it as a place to sit, set your feet on it as an ottoman, or in this instance use it as a table!

I was so excited to incorporate the Hampton Bay Lemon Grove 7 piece Dining Set including the Hampton Bay Patio Umbrella in Cafe in my outdoor space.

The Patio Furniture

Niña has wicker furniture throughout her home, but this was my first wicker furniture to own! I was pretty excited when I received it. Oh my, it’s even more gorgeous in person!

The cushion comes in the color Surplus, but I wanted something more neutral to incorporate the color scheme I had in mind.

The cushion cover color I chose was Saddle, which works perfect with the copper tones I incorporated in the backyard patio space including the Cecelia Copper Flatware Set, Hampton Bay Maison Fire Pit for chilly nights and the Hampton Bay Copper Beverage Cart to hold drinks for active kids.

The Tablescape with Succulents

My favorite part of styling this modern, eclectic patio area is the tablescape!

I went to The Home Depot and grabbed some beautiful succulents and cactus plants as my centerpieces.

Aren’t they beautiful?!

I can’t wait to invite some people over and enjoy breakfast outside in this inviting backyard patio space for all ages. I hope this post inspires you to provide a fun backyard patio space for your family and guests!

Cecilia is a lifestyle blogger from Iowa. She works with her twin sister Niña to produce Niña and Cecilia, a blog where they love sharing their everyday lives, home inspiration, and tutorials.
