This backyard transformation was really a rescue mission. One day Cristina Garay of Remodelando La Casa woke up to realize her once-lovely backyard had gone to seed. It was barely even functional as a place to enjoy the outdoors.
She built a floating deck, and then fitted it with beautiful new patio furniture, outdoor lighting, a couple of homemade potting benches and more. Now it’s a lovely and comfortable outdoor space she’s rightly proud of.
Backyard Transformation
To say that our backyard needed a makeover was a big understatement. We needed a complete backyard transformation! The main problem: dealing with a slanted yard.
When the kids were little we created a small leveled play area where they had a playset. It worked great, but life has its own way. The playset broke, the kids grew, and the entire yard got completely neglected, gradually deteriorating to the point you see above. Sad and embarrassing.
Time for a Backyard Transformation
I was more than ready to take on this Patio Style Challenge that The Home Depot offered me. The past several weeks I’ve been working diligently to transform this space from dread and ugly to the space that can be used as:
- Teen hang out spot
- Gardening center
- A comfortable backyard space to relax and entertain
I’m so glad to report those three functions were completely achieved, and the entire family is enjoying this space to the max.
Building the floating deck was the most important project to bring this backyard to life. The previous wooden retaining “square” made this space feel like a sunken hole in the middle of our yard. Building a platform gave us the bonus of a better view of all the wild life in the preservation area beyond our backyard.
The Outdoor Umbrella
The Hampton Bay Valley Seating was the perfect addition to create a most comfortable and stylish space. Among the many available colors I chose to dress the cushions with these beautiful Sumbrella Slipcovers in Spa color.
One of the items I’m enjoying the most is this 11 Ft. LED Offset Patio Umbrella. It’s BIG and provides tons of shade, but I also love the privacy it provides from nosy neighbors.
The Homemade Potting Benches
I also made use of the old potting benches to create some more privacy. This set of potting benches were done with the remains of our kids playset. Yes, it’s a repurposed project. You can find instructions for this potting bench on my blog.
After a good cleaning and two coats of BEHR – Fennell Seed Ext Semi-Gloss Paint, they look like new again.
This is my happy spot in this patio makeover, I added a “flower market” sign and decorated the top of the benches with those cute Metal Star String Lights.
The Outdoor Rug
The Hampton Bay Agave Natural Indoor/Outdoor Rug is the element that defines the space. It’s soft and cozy, and it makes this entire area look like a room inside the house!
Throw Pillows
Another way to cozy up an outdoor space is with the addition of throw pillows. I just felt in love with these Hampton Bay Chili Flower Squared Outdoor Throw Pillows, that yellow color is so striking!
Nesting Tables
The nesting table are a thrift store score that were painted BEHR Little Sun Dress Ext Semi-Gloss paint.
They’re now serving dual purpose. They work great as as regular side tables to hold beverages, but they’re also Chinese and regular checker game tables.
DIY Outdoor Beverage Cart
The outdoor bar cart is another DIY project of mine. Complete instructions on how you can build your own cart are on my website. It holds all the food, glasses, dishes you’ll need for entertaining on the deck. Tucked underneath is my Galvanized Metal Beverage Tub, which is such a versatile piece!
The Corner Sitting Area
A little sitting area was set in the other corner of the deck. A set of old wrought iron chairs that were almost consumed in rust got a well-deserved paint treatment with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer.
Plants in beautiful planters are the perfect decor element for any outdoor space.
As the day comes to a close and the chill in the air sets in, nothing beats being in front of a roasting fire. Curl up in your favorite blanket while making some yummy s’mores.
By the way, each of those throw pillows are made from a Home Decorators Collection wool/cotton scatter rug found at The Home Depot for under five bucks.
Outdoor Lighting
The final touch for unbelievable evening entertaining comes with the lighting.
I’m totally in love with this space at night. All the lights create a magic atmosphere!
