Supplies

Step 1

Start off by painting or staining two-to-three pieces of wood. While the paint is drying, trim a few spruce branches to be slightly larger than the size of the wood canvas.

Step 2

Once the paint is dry, lay out the design of the spruce art by placing branches along with berries on the wood canvas.

Placing the spruce branches diagonally across the frame usually looks best.

Step 3

Once you’re pleased with the layout – get gluing!

Affix spruce by the branch to the wood with generous amounts of glue.

Be sure to steer clear of gluing the needles to the canvas. You want the branches to stand out from the frame, which will add dimension and a little drama to your holiday wall hanging.

Add in the berries for a pop of color. Add them in several small clumps of berries to look natural.

Step 4

Hang your DIY spruce wall art canvases on an open wall in the entryway, over a desk or serving table, or any place in your home where you’d like to create a festive atmosphere.

Create Your Own Gift Wrap Station

Create Your Own Gift Wrap Station

Gift wrapping supplies are awkward to store, and after you’re done using them, you’re always left with a big mess of unraveled wrapping paper and ribbons. Fortunately, we found a quick and affordable solution to all your gift wrapping woes.

Follow this tutorial to make your next present wrapping session easier, more organized, and stylish all year round with DIY gift wrap station tutorial!

Materials Needed to Create Your Own Gift Wrap Station

Your Stylish Gift Wrap Station

Supplies

Create Your Own Gift Wrap Station

Before you start, always work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, like your garage, when you’re spray painting. To protect your surroundings from paint, cover your entire work area with a drop cloth.

Create Your Own Gift Wrap Station

Step 1 – Sand the Picture Frame

Sand the picture frame with a sanding sponge or sandpaper to remove any chipped paint and to smooth the frame’s entire surface.

For best results, lightly sand.

Create Your Own Gift Wrap Station

Step 2 – Wipe Down the Frame

Once you’re done sanding, wipe the whole frame down with your tack cloth. Make sure the frame is completely free of any dust or dirt from sanding. This will ensure that your paint adheres properly.

Create Your Own Gift Wrap Station

Step 3 – Spray Paint the Frame

To start painting your frame, shake your can of Rust-Oleum Universal Matte – French Cream spray paint for one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Then, hold your can 8-12 in. from the frame and spray in a steady back-and-forth motion, slightly overlapping each stroke. Spray 2-3 light coats a few minutes apart, then let the frame dry for about 30 minutes.

Create Your Own Gift Wrap Station

Step 4 – Topcoat the Frame

To protect your frame’s paint from wear over time, apply your Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover 2X Clear – Matte spray paint as a topcoat. To apply, first shake your can for one minute after the mixing ball starts rattling. Then, hold the can 10-16 in. away from the frame and apply 2-3 light coats a few minutes apart. Once you’re done applying the topcoat, set the frame aside to dry for 24 hours.

Pro tip: To avoid wrinkling between coats, apply topcoat within 1 hour. If you can’t complete in this time frame, wait 48 hours before applying topcoat.

Step 5 – Sand the Dowel Rods

Next, you’ll want to lightly sand each dowel rod with sandpaper or a sanding sponge. This will ensure that the paint adheres to the rods and gives you smooth and even coverage. For best results, lightly sand. When you’re done sanding, be sure to wipe down the dowel rods to remove any dust.

Create Your Own Gift Wrap Station

Step 6 – Spray Paint the Dowel Rods

Spray paint each dowel rod with Rust-Oleum Universal Metallic – Aged Copper spray paint, using the same technique you used to spray the frame in Step 3. To make sure you cover the entire rod, spray 2-3 light, even coats on one side of each rod, then wait until the paint is dry to the touch (about 30 minutes) before turning the rod over and spraying the other side.

Once the rods are painted, repeat this step on your tube straps.

Create Your Own Gift Wrap Station

Step 7 – Topcoat the Dowel Rods

Now that the dowel rods and tube straps have dried for about 30 minutes, spray them with 2-3 light coats of Rust-Oleum Ultra Cover 2X Clear – Matte spray paint. Use the same technique you used in Step 4 to topcoat the frame. This will protect the metallic paint from rubbing off.

Set everything aside for 24 hours to dry completely.

Pro tip: To avoid wrinkling between coats, apply topcoat within one hour. If you can’t complete in this time frame, wait 48 hours before applying topcoat.

Create Your Own Gift Wrap Station

Step 8 – Attach the Tube Straps

Once your frame, dowel rods, and tube straps are all completely dry, attach the tube straps to the frame using the included nails and a hammer. Space the straps evenly so that you leave enough room for each roll of wrapping paper. You’ll also want to make sure the straps are lined up on each side.

Create Your Own Gift Wrap Station

Step 9 – Hang the Frame

Attach your picture hanging hardware to the back of the frame, following the directions on the packaging. Then, hang the frame where you want your gift wrap station to be. Make sure you hang it at a comfortable height where you can easily reach the top dowel rod.

Create Your Own Gift Wrap Station

Step 10 – Add Your Wrapping Paper

Slide rolls of wrapping paper and ribbon spools onto the rods, and then slip the ends of each rod into their respective tube straps. If you’d like to add a stopper to the ends of the rods so that they can’t be pulled out, we found that rubber leg tips work well.

Make a Festive Entryway Statement This Christmas

Make a Festive Entryway Statement This Christmas

Jessica Camerata of My Style Vita likes to update her entryway for the holidays. To make her festive entryway, she used supplies from The Home Depot to transform her entryway into a Christmas showcase.

We invited her to take part in our Holiday Style Challenge and sent Jessica a mystery box of Home Depot Christmas decorations along with a Home Depot gift card to get her started on her Christmas decorating.

When the holidays begin to roll around, the first thing I always update to help transform my space into a festive oasis, is the entryway. It’s the first thing my friends and family see when they walk in and helps to set the tone for the season.

Since my entryway is small and all indoors, it can be a bit of a challenge to decorate this space. Some of my favorite ways to add some holiday cheer to the foyer and entryway are easy and can make a big statement.

How to Create a Festive Entryway for Christmas

One thing I always do for each season is add a new wreath to my door. We went with a classic Christmas wreath with touches of red cranberries and pinecones.

I then swapped out my blush pink entryway table for a gold bar cart. It’s a great piece to decorate with the additional shelf and the gold really tied in the festive feel we were going for.

I strung Home Depot’s pre-lit garland around the entire front of the cart to dress it up. The lights really add a nice ambiance to my space come night time.

With a few decorative accents like a snowflake bowl full of ornaments, a FA LA LA chalkboard and gold reindeer, this entry way table is feeling ready for Christmas.

My favorite way to display my holiday cards each year is on my gold starburst Martha Stewart mirror. It’s the perfect place to see all my cards in one place. Before this, I would just plop them in a pile on my desk and never get a moment to enjoy them. Now they’re up for everyone to see and make for a great spot to stop and read all the love for the season.

Fireplace Mantel Makeover and Holiday Decorations

Fireplace Mantel Makeover and Holiday Decorations

Alexi Bullock of Alexi Bullock Design loves to create designs that reflect her personal taste— especially in her home. We invited her to take part in our Holiday Style Challenge, and sent Alexi a mystery box of Home Depot Christmas decorations to get her started on her Christmas decorating.

For the Style Challenge, Alexi gave her living room a modern look with a fireplace mantel makeover. Then she added gorgeous Christmas decorations in time for the holidays.

A home’s mantel is likely the centerpiece to a family’s home. It’s also one of the very best places to decorate during the holidays! For most of December, (and probably part of November if you love Christmas as much as I do) most homes have stockings, garlands, and maybe some lights or artwork attached to or surrounding a mantel to create a beautiful focal point in your home.

This year, as I was pondering how to decorate the mantel of our new home during the holiday season, it dawned on me that I didn’t even like our fireplace mantel! There wasn’t anything particularly wrong with it, except it didn’t feel like “us.” My husband and I like a more modern and minimal style, so I couldn’t see us with putting so much focus on our mantel for Christmas when I didn’t even love the look of my mantel in the first place.

So I made the decision to go for a complete fireplace mantel makeover to create the new perfect mantel from scratch.

I’m excited to share with you my journey and share the steps if you would like to create your own modern mantel.

Here’s the before and after:

Fireplace Mantel Makeover and Holiday Decorations

Fireplace Mantel Makeover

Step 1

Remove Existing Mantel

Fireplace Mantel Makeover

If you have a mantel like mine, made of tile and a painted piece of wood, then you can get away with ripping down your existing mantel and any other parts you want to replace.

To get your mantel off, take a razor blade, and slit around the outside of the mantel near the wall where it has been sealed with caulk. This step is crucial to taking off your mantel easily.

Then to loosen it, use a crowbar and hammer to lightly tap around the outside where it meets the wall. When you start to actually pry, place a slat of wood (like a sample floorboard) between the wall and your crowbar so you don’t damage the drywall. My mantel came off pretty easily at that point. I also ripped off my tile using a crowbar as well, although that part was a little more time-intensive.

Step 2

Prep Your Floors

Fireplace Mantel Makeover

My first step before I put down tile was to put down cement backerboard, which you can score with scoring knife. I used cement board to make an even surface on top of the plywood, and I also needed a little more height so it would be even with my new wood flooring. When you screw cement board into place, use these special cement board screws.

Step 3

Tile (And Grout) Your Floor

Fireplace Mantel Makeover

I had never tried tiling before, and after watching this video, and talking to some Home Depot associates, I felt ready to give it a try.

I was scared before I began, but tiling was much easier than I had anticipated. Just go slow, be meticulous, and as precise as you can. Also, if you select larger tile like I did, then you can also have your local Home Depot cut a few pieces of tile in half so you don’t need to rent a tile saw or buy your own tile cutter.

Fireplace Mantel Makeover

These are all the supplies you will need to tile, including the grout:

Step 4

Figure Out Your Mantel Dimensions and Build a Frame

Fireplace Mantel Makeover

I ended up using mostly 2 x 6-in. wood you can find in the lumbar section of The Home Depot.

Basically, build a frame for your new mantel, and attach it to the wall screwing directly into your existing studs. Your dimensions will be different than mine, but just make sure your vertical studs are spaced close enough that your drywall (coming up in the next step) won’t be damaged by something hitting it.

Step 5

Add Drywall

Fireplace Mantel Makeover

This step was relatively easy, just be meticulous, again.

A tip for cutting drywall is to score it, just like the cement backerboard, but using a razor blade, bend it, and it will snap. You may need to slit the other side of the drywall to make a clean cut. But then just screw it into your new frame.

Step 6

Mud Your Drywall

Fireplace Mantel Makeover

This step is the only one I would highly recommend finding someone else to do. I hired some professionals, but still bought them all the supplies from The Home Depot. Watching the swiftness and skill from professionals helped me realize that this step was definitely worth it for me.

Step 7

Paint your Mantel

I didn’t photograph this step, but it was pretty straightforward.

I painted the whole mantel in bright  white, and while I was at it, I painted the wall white too so it would feel nice and simplistic.

Step 8

Add Your Solid Wood Mantelpiece

Fireplace Mantel Makeover

This was by far the most rewarding step. It was so nice spending time perfecting the mantelpiece and then adding it to the mantel.

I had to special order the piece of wood from The Home Depot because they don’t keep the dimensions I wanted in-store. It was a 6 x 8 and very long, so it was huge, and so heavy.

My new favorite Home Depot associate ended up helping me cut it to-size at the store and loaded it into my car. Thank you, Paul (no but seriously, Paul also taught me how to stain properly)!

When I got it home, I sanded it down really well so there were no rough sides or edges. Then, since it’s a soft wood, pine, I used a wood conditioner to treat the wood first. This step allows the stain to apply more evenly. I’m so happy I included this step, it made a huge difference, and only took an additional 15 minutes. Just follow the simple instructions on the conditioner if you do this step.

Then, I stained the wood using this wood finish espresso oil-based interior stain. The best way to stain is to use an inexpensive brush, and make sure you follow the grain as you apply.

Then let it sit for 5-15 minutes, depending on how dark you want the color, then remove all the excess stain by rubbing it down with a disposable rag.

You’ll then need to let the stain dry for a few hours, but then you’re ready to add it to your mantel! Attach it with construction-grade adhesive using a caulk gun, and you will be good to go for the last step!

Christmas Decorations for the Fireplace Mantel

I love all of The Home Depot’s Holiday decor, especially this adorable gold reindeer and this gorgeous gold glitter Christmas tree that arrived in The Home Depot’s mystery box.

This Winslow garland and this Winslow wreath also helped bring the perfect amount of natural elements to my mantel.

You can take a look at all of their gorgeous holiday decor here! Having a mantel that fit my style made it even more fun decorating for my favorite holiday. And it turned out awesome in the end, take a look!
