Every holiday season brings more ornaments and keepsakes, and it seems there’s never enough room on the tree for all your favorites–so why not build your own DIY pigeon display for your Christmas ornaments?
This display case is a perfect way to show off the ornaments that have special meaning. It’s also a good way to display your “nice” ornaments you don’t want to risk falling off the Christmas tree or being within reach of little hands.
Follow along with our step-by-step tutorial on how to add this DIY pigeon hole display to your holiday decor.
DIY Pigeon Hole Display
Materials Needed
- 1-in. x 4-in. boards
- Circular saw
- Square trim screws
- Drill
- Drill bits
- Wood glue
- Brad nailer
- Wood filler
- Orbital sander
- 220-grit sandpaper
- Microfiber cloth
- Paint brush
- Behr Premium Plus Interior Paint in Cherry Red (Semi Gloss)
- ⅞-in. brass C-hooks
- D-ring hangers
- Carpenter’s square
- Pencil
- Rubber gloves
- Safety glasses
- Ear plugs
- Work gloves
- Sanding block
Step 1: Measure, Mark & Cut Wood
Measure, mark and cut the 1-in. x 4-in. boards using a circular saw for six pieces at 28 inches long for the horizontal shelves, and two pieces at 29½ inches for the vertical sides of the display case.
Next, cut 20 pieces at 5 inches each–these will be the vertical inserts that create “cubbies” for each ornament within the frame.
NOTE: When cutting wood, always clamp it down to a stable work surface. Wear safety glasses, ear plugs and work gloves as your tools require.
Step 2: Assemble Frame
Using square trim screws and a drill, assemble the perimeter of the frame using the two vertical pieces and two of the horizontal pieces cut in Step 1.
Step 3: Add Vertical Inserts
Building up from the bottom, evenly space four vertical slats every 5 inches, and attach to the bottom horizontal board using wood glue and a brad nailer.
HINT: You can use one of the 20 inserts as a spacer to make this part of process go faster.
Step 4: Repeat, Building Upwards
Once all four vertical inserts of the DIY ornament holder are in place, attach the horizontal boards using wood glue and nail gun.
Repeat until the cubbies are complete.
Step 5: Wood Fill & Sand
Use wood filler to patch all holes and let dry.
Next, smooth out it out using the orbit sander with 220-grit sandpaper.
Wipe it down with a microfiber cloth before moving to next step.
Step 6: Paint Display
Paint the entire pigeon hole display box using Behr Premium Plus Interior Paint in Cherry Red (Semi Gloss).
Step 7: Add Hooks
Install ⅞-in. brass C hooks at the top of each pigeon hole by hand.
Step 8: Add Hanging Hardware
We used a drill to install D-ring hangers at the top corners of the DIY pigeon hole display box with provided screws.
The Finished DIY Pigeon Hole Display
Now you can use your new display to showcase all of your most treasured ornaments.
