This family room makeover boasts a range of luxurious textures, cozy finishes, and a calming color scheme that encourages lots of conversation and lounging. Carrie Waller of Dream Green DIY styled this gorgeous family room relying on Home Decorators Collection for the furnishing and flooring, filling in the rest with some of her own fun vintage pieces.
Read on for Carrie’s breakdown of the design strategies that made this family room both livable and lovely!
A Cozy, Retro-Inspired Family Room Makeover
As a DIY designer, one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is successfully blending form with function. I don’t mind admitting that I’ve spent hours considering patterned throw pillows in store. Sometimes, though, it’s so easy to get so caught up in the decorative details, that I forget I’ll eventually spend hours at home actually enjoying said throw pillows!
So, when it came time to make over our family room, I made a pact with myself right up front to pay extra special attention to the comfort value of each and every piece that I chose for the visual design of the space.
A Cozy Conversation Zone
The first step, of course, was coming up with a vibe for the room. The tone of the entire space–from furniture and art, to textiles and lighting–would all be dictated by the overall function that we gave it, so my husband and I spent a couple of weeks brainstorming ideas for how we would ultimately use the room.
Although we considered making it a billiards room and even a large home office, in the end, we decided to transform it into a cozy conversation zone and a place to watch television and movies.
Color Palette: Sage Green, Steel Blue and Warm Gray
Since we wanted the room to be the type of space we would naturally gravitate towards, I pulled together a palette of sage green, steely blue and warm gray alongside hints of coral and lots of complimentary wood grains.
I’ve learned that having a specific scheme in mind from the get-go helps make furniture and accessory choices much easier down the line, and it was certainly the case while designing our family room makeover.
Furnishing with Comfort in Mind
With my foundational vibe and palette in mind, I moved on to furniture and fixture selection.
As I browsed the Home Decorators Collection online, I would consistently ask myself one question: “Is this comfortable?”
Sure, my design-loving eye was drawn to things like sculptural accent chairs, minimalist surfaces, and even the occasional metal statement piece or two, but I instead settled on pieces that all hinted at an easier-going way of life.
A gently curved microfiber sofa and soft bonded leather side chair turned the center section of the room into the main conversation area that we now enjoy for hours at a time, while a round glass coffee table offers room to move around with ease. Matching mid-century inspired wood cabinets–a television stand and a side table–sport plenty of handy storage space, while nodding towards our love for the 1960s era of design.
Pretty wood and chrome fans provide a nice breeze on sunny afternoons, while white blinds help diffuse the harsher hours of sunlight. Finally, layered rugs underfoot give our new laminate floors a bit of welcome bounce and plushness perfect for bare feet morning, noon, and night.
Fun, Vintage Accessories
The final layer in our family room makeover was a collection of our favorite secondhand finds from local antique and thrift stores. These often one-of-a-kind diamond-in-the-rough type pieces set our room apart from the rest, plus we love having the opportunity to relive memories spent antiquing together downtown.
When I catch sight of the quirky mid-century radio on our console, I think back to the day we unearthed it in a box of old, marked down electronics, or there are memories of that one spontaneous Saturday morning when I picked up a funky oil painting on a whim. The vintage kilim rug that we hung behind the TV is a fun reminder of the days we spent sipping coffee side by side on the couch while hunting online for the perfect runner in our color palette.
By accenting the TV cabinet, coffee table, side tables, walls and even the mantel with these vintage treasures, we’re able to give the room distinction, making it truly feel like home.
A home’s “family room” warrants the title for a reason–it’s meant to be a place where everyone can relax and recharge, and happily, that’s exactly what this made over room has become for our own family.
The good news is that pulling it all together really only requires a handful of intentional decisions. By focusing your color scheme on a soft, calming palette and choosing furniture and textiles that are inherently cozy, your own family room can become a place that blends form, function, and a little fun, too!
