Don’t you love it when you find a gem at the local vintage shop? Beth Bryan of Unskinny Boppy repurposed this piece of canvas with metal clips for her Holiday Ornament Display project. A Rustic Holiday Ornament Display

Winter Wonderland Christmas Mantel for a Beachy Decor

A DIY “merry” sign is the centerpiece of this sweet Christmas mantel styled to complement a beachy decor.

Holly Wade of Club Crafted styled the Christmas mantel for our Holiday Style Challenge series here on The Home Depot Blog.

A Christmas Mantel for a Beachy Decor

When The Home Depot asked me to participate in this year’s Holiday Style Challenge, I was thrilled because Christmas is my absolute favorite holiday. I was asked to style a Christmas mantel. My apartment doesn’t have a fireplace, so I hijacked my aunt’s newly renovated fireplace and mantel area to style a sweet winter wonderland scene that reflected her home’s beachy decor.

In addition to a few of The Home Depot’s beautiful new array of Christmas ornaments and wood gift box decorations, I styled this scene with a large DIY “merry” sign using a large piece of plywood and several of my aunt’s beautiful blue vintage glass pieces and seashells.

Complementing the Beachy Decor

Because my aunt’s home has a very beachy theme, I thought the blue, white, silver and gold colors matched perfectly with her existing décor, using some pops of green. First, I added the large wood gift boxes on either side of the fireplace.

Then I made a DIY ornament garland using several of The Home Depot’s small ornaments from the Martha Stewart Living Alpine Holiday collection that fit my color scheme and glued them to a long (about 7 ft.) garland using a hot glue gun. Luckily, the ornaments are light so the hot glue is strong enough to hold them together. Once dry, I removed any loose glue strings and draped it along the front of the mantel using clear Command Hooks that come off cleanly after the holidays.

DIY “Merry” Sign

To make the large DIY “merry” sign, I purchased a large, square piece of plywood that was about 3 x 3 ft. With a pencil, I outlined the word “merry” in very large block cursive and erased any mistakes. Using a light blue paint, I painted around the outside of the letters with a small paint brush and then filled in the outside with a larger brush. This way, the word itself was left as plain plywood. (Note, to take this up a notch, try adding glitter to the paint!)

When the wood was completely dry, I propped it up in the middle of the mantel. In front, I spread out pillow stuffing to look like snow and spread out several white bottle brush trees, sea shells and blue glass pieces.

Lastly, since I felt her lovely high ceiling was missing something, I used clear fishing line and hooks (or use thumb tacks) to create a hanging mobile of ornaments from the ceiling across the length of the mantel and dangling at various heights using ornaments in the same color scheme.

Just like that, the whole Christmas mantel came together with the cozy look of a California Christmas. When it was all finished, my aunt and sister were arguing over who would get to keep the decorations!

Meet the 2016 Holiday Style Challenge Partners

We’re so excited for you to meet our talented partners for the 2016 Holiday Style Challenge. Each of these bloggers was challenged to decorate a space in their home with festive holiday decor from The Home Depot. They came up with some pretty amazing designs and holiday DIYs that we know you’ll love!

Aniko is a photographer, artist, stylist, DIYer and the creative mind behind Place Of My Taste. She loves home decor; she loves to design and decorate, create, DIY and inspire others. Aniko runs a family business with her husband in Richmond, Virgina, and she is doing photography part time at Aniko Levai Photography. Her work has was published in several national publications and many large sites. She keeps herself busy with work most of the time, but when she is not digging deep into DIY projects, or she is not out on a field doing photography, Aniko spends time with her husband and her two precious boys.

Chloe is self described as, “a girl relocated from Miu Miu to moo moo,” uprooted from urban living. She says she is a chicken and quinoa kind of girl, living in a meat and potato kind of world. Chloe writes about balancing life as a hostess, homemaker, and farm girl. Now located on a cattle ranch in northern California, in a town with a population of 99, Chloe keeps the company of her chickens, duck, kittens, horses, dog, cows, goats, and husband. There’s a few cows there too. Chloe also works as a freelance stylist for boutique wineries, bakeries, florists, and other creative businesses to help tell their unique story.

Courtney Clymer is the owner of Lifestyled Atlanta, an Atlanta-based wardrobe styling and personal shopping company with an accompanying fashion and style blog. She is also an interior decorator for Mimosa Design Co., a remodeling and interior design company she owns with her husband, Harrison. She loves everything to do with style, from wardrobes, to style, to home. Courtney loves to incorporate unique touches and bold accents in both her wardrobe and design businesses, and regularly takes on new projects and transformations in her own home. When she’s not blogging, meeting with clients, or overseeing projects, you’ll find her in downtown Roswell, Georgia with her husband and two labs.

Put a Little Joy in Your Holiday Décor

There’s no need to spend a lot of money on holiday décor. Spray paint lets you customize practically any new piece with the color of your choice and allows you to give new life and purpose to existing holiday decorations.

While we completed multiple pieces for our festive room makeover, here’s how we painted the “joy” marquee sign to match the rest of our holiday décor.

Materials

• Joy Sign
• Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover Primer
• Specialty Glitter – Red
• Mask
• Drop Cloth
• Gloves
• Painter’s Tape
• Sandpaper

Step 1: Drop Cloth

The first step with any project is to locate a well ventilated space for completing your project. The best place to work is the yard or garage (with the garage door open). Once you find the space you are going to work in, simply spread out your drop cloth and get started!

Step 2: Tape

The Joy Sign we used has beautiful lights built in. In order to protect these lights from spray paint, you will need to tape each light off with a little bit of painter’s tape. Once you have covered each light, you are ready for the sanding step.

Step 3: Sand

Now that you have your workspace ready to go, and the lights taped off, it’s time to sand your project.

Lightly sanding will help remove any lose paint or debris from the project, ensuring a smooth surface for your next step. Remove any sanding dust from your sign by wiping the surface with a tack cloth or clean dampened cotton cloth.

Step 4: Prime

Next, apply a good quality primer, like Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover Primer. Priming forms a tight bond to surfaces so your topcoat goes on smoother and lasts even longer.

Simply shake the can for one minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Then apply the primer, holding the can 10 to 16 inches from your project in a steady back-and-forth motion.

Apply two or more light coats a few minutes apart to avoid drips and runs.

The primer is ready to be top coated within one hour of drying.

Step 5: Paint

Now, you are ready to get your glitter on!

First, shake your can of Specialty Glitter in Red for one minute after the mixing ball starts to rattle.

Hold the can 12 to 14 inches away from the surface of the sign, and spray using the same technique you used to prime.

Apply two or more light coats a few minutes apart.

Your sign will be dry to the handle in 60 minutes and fully dry within 24 hours.

Tip: For added protection, continued shine and brilliance, topcoat your completed project with Rust-Oleum Specialty Clear Glitter Sealer.

The fun doesn’t stop with one item. Head to your local flea market or even your basement for other inexpensive items that can be easily spray painted.

We added touches of red and silver throughout our holiday room.

Let your stocking hangers and wire baskets shine with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Metallic Apple Red! Add some bling to that old candle holder with Rust-Oleum Specialty Glitter in Silver. Add a touch of winter with Universal French Cream and Castle Rock to warm up your holiday décor.

Mid-Century Modern Basement Makeover

Jennifer Stagg of withHEART relied on Home Decorators Collection for the main pieces in her gorgeous basement makeover.

The mid-century vibe is totally irresistible, and as it turns out, fairly easy to achieve.

Everyone wants that space in their home they can just hang out in. An area that feels relaxed, yet functional; beautiful yet easy-feeling. I wanted our basement to serve primarily for this purpose—a comfortable entertaining space that not only could host friends but also pre-schoolers for a playdate. Our home gets lived in—every inch of it. It’s important to me to have the right balance of pretty and approachable so everyone feels like they can kick back and feel at home.

I was thrilled when Home Decorators Collection and The Home Depot reached out to me to participate in this collaboration. I knew I had the perfect spot to tackle: a sort of awkward space in between our second kitchen/bar area, and our family room. It’s a little oddly shaped, and needed some major sprucing up. After we renovated our 1970 mid-century rambler last year, this space had a fresh coat of paint and some new carpet, but not much else.

It had been serving as a toy collection (read: toy mess that our kids constantly turned into the aftermath of a tornado), which pretty much drove me crazy. We have a playroom, so I wanted those toys outta there! My vision was to turn this dysfunctional area into a dining space.

Here’s how my basement makeover all came together.

Mid-Century Modern Basement Makeover

As I looked through dining tables and sideboards on The Home Depot’s website, I started by selecting the Conrad dining table and Conrad sideboard for storage. They are the perfect combination of modern and classic.

And can we just talk about the color? I love the wood tone so much! Not too warm, or too grey—it’s just right. The chairs had to be comfortable as well as pretty and I chose the Becca leather back dining chairs. They upholstered on the front and have leather on the back. I think leather warms up any space and in a basement, it was a great choice to round out the room.

The space has a lot of deep grey and white, so I wanted a bold rug to add some color. If the rest of a room is fairly neutral in color palette, a rug is a great way to add a pop of color without making it feel like you’ve gone overboard. I’ve been really into the Southwestern prints lately and the Aztec rug was a fun addition.

For easy drink display, the Eliza bar cart fits perfectly in the space. I love a bar cart not just for entertaining, but for added style opportunities as a place to show off photos, vases, books, or figurines.

Above the sideboard, I added a gallery wall with family photos and a few personal touches. On top, I used the Morph glass vase and the Explorer Desk Telescope. The table has the Teakwood Long Bowl filled with apples.

Maybe my favorite décor touch is the Pluto Wall Clock, hanging in the kitchen area. You guys, it’s so good! Feels like a perfect mid-century touch in our very mid-century home.

This space is now complete and ready to entertain for the holidays! I can’t wait to show off my basement makeover to our family and friends.

3 Craft Ideas for Your Thanksgiving Tablescape

While you entertain your guests for Thanksgiving or a fall dinner party, give them some stunning visuals to feast their eyes on at the table. This easy to create Thanksgiving tablescape is a great way for you to set the tone for the holiday, show off a little of your DIY know-how.

DIY Metallic Pumpkins

Pumpkins are the perfect autumnal piece, and although they typically get passed up for the turkey, they are a great differentiator for your Thanksgiving tablescape. You can create your own three-dimensional pumpkin as a stand-out festive table décor piece by using M-D Aluminum Sheets and a Liberty Hardware 1-1/2 in. Antique Teal French Romantic Knob.

To create these beauties, start by using MD Hobby Shears to cut your metal sheeting into strips. You can use either hobby wire or hot glue to secure these strips together in the shape of a pumpkin. Finally, using the same methods, secure your antique teal knob at the top of your pumpkin for a striking stem.

We recommend using a few sheets with strips at different widths to create small, medium and large pumpkins. You can group them together or spread them across your table for a more casual look. Creating your own table décor pieces allows you to play with different colors and shapes that you wouldn’t find at your local stores. The Home Depot has metal sheet in a variety of designs and finishes, so you can mix and match your metallic pieces for something uniquely you!

These metallic pumpkins are so versatile that you don’t have to limit them to only a tablescape. You can use them near your entryway, or even outside on your stoop for something new and unique to celebrate fall. DIY Napkin Rings

Keep your napkins looking stylish and chic with these simple and easy to make napkin rings! These bold metallic rings really give your table a bold and elegant look.

For our metal sheet napkin rings, we wanted to offset both the color and the finish of the pumpkins, while also contrasting them in a fun and festive way. We chose to use the M-D Cloverleaf pattern in an antiqued brass, since it fit well with the overall color scheme of the table and provided a point of differentiation in the pattern.

When you’re creating your tablescape, go bold on your finish and material mixture. The versatility of this sheeting will actually allow you to spray paint right over it if you want a unique color.

Start by marking and measuring your aluminum sheeting and cutting them into strips. If you’ve chosen a patterned aluminum sheet, then work around the fine perforated details of the metal to really give it some pizzazz. The strips you cut won’t need to be large. In fact, you can actually create more than one napkin with a single strip.

Wrap your napkin ring around the rolled silverware and, similarly to the pumpkins, you can use a hobby wire to secure these together. Be sure to keep them a little loose to allow your guests to remove them with ease.

Place Card Holders

Have you ever been a guest at someone’s house for dinner and weren’t sure where to sit? Avoid this awkward party faux pas and provide your guests with their own place cards for their convenience. These personalized touches are easy to make and give your guests the feeling of being considered throughout all aspects of your event – even your décor!

The first step to making the place card holders is to pick your cabinet knob for the base. We chose the Liberty Hardware 1¼ in. Amber Acrylic Ridge Knob and the Liberty Hardware 1½ in. Cocoa Traditional Style Wood Knob. We chose these knobs for their mix of style and material with warm, textured glass and classic turned wood to fit into our color spectrum. However, the sky is the limit when choosing your own knobs.

With the wide variety of cabinet knobs available, you can custom tailor the base to your exact theme and style. If you’re looking for more direction on different styles and materials of knobs, check out more options in our decorative bottle stopper project.

After you’ve picked a base to fit your theme, you’ll need to wrap craft wire around the base of the knob and attach a clothes pin to it for the name card. The place card can be paper, found objects, or anything that a clothes pin can easily slide through. The great part is, with a more versatile base you can mix and match place cards for future events!

After you’ve created the unique decorative elements for your Thanksgiving tablescape, all that’s left is table dressings, serve ware, and glassware.

Oh, and don’t forget the food!

Beautiful, Family-Friendly Living Room Makeover

This beautiful living room makeover was a special project by Destiny Alfonso of Just Destiny Mag for a beautiful family with extra big hearts.

Since the family often welcomes foster children into their home, the living room makeover needed to make the room attractive, comfortable and ready for family time.

The new furnishings, drapes and area rug all come from The Home Depot’s Home Decorators Collection, and as you’ll see, it all looks fabulous.

Living Room Makeover

My friend Natalie is a wife and a mother to three, but also a mother to all! Her husband and her foster children throughout the year and share their home with no conditions to whoever is in need. She loves the babies, so anytime I come over I can get my baby fix or chase toddlers around while we chat it up.

When you first walk into their home the have a living room area that was completely bare. They used the room for hockey games and dance parties on the weekends and left it open during the week because, well, it just wasn’t a priority. Being the home blogger and designer that I am, every time I would enter her home I would decorate it for her…in my head. I imagined some curtains and rugs to warm things up, a couple of seating options for her and her husband to get away in the morning for devotions or wind down at night after a long day with the kids.

Before the Living Room Makeover

The room has great light with a wall color similar to Behr’s Parchment Paper, which keeps things nice and fresh.

But other than that, this room needed a lot of love. The design kind, because their little family has enough love to hold these walls together for years.

The New Living Room

Here is the concept I put together for them. Natalie’s style is simple. Not over the top and very approachable. She craves design but is just a little too busy to actually put it all together! So I took some of her wants and needs and married them to create this concept board for the living room makeover.

The anchor piece for the entire design is this gorgeous blue sofa. The blue is the same deep blue that I remember seeing out in the middle of the ocean this summer while we were on our cruise. It’s like they captured that color in a bottle and poured it right over the entire thing.

I love to mix and match rooms as much as I can. So opposite of the deep blue sofa we selected two chairs. One that was a bit more traditional with, a linen Marie armchair, and another natural linen armchair that was a little more structured with a wood frame. Both in neutral colors so I wouldn’t compete with our blue beauty!

To bring in a little glam I selected this rounded glass table. Natalie didn’t want anything with corners because of the kids running around and I couldn’t have agreed more. But to keep it a bit more grown up we opted for the glass. She can handle fingerprints like a boss.

Just like I imagined when I first walked into her home a few years ago, we warmed the space up with some faux linen drapes in a warm gray and a natural fiber area rug. We were both very surprised on how comfortable the nrug was on the feet! From the way it looks one might think it would be scratchy, but it’s not at all!

For extra storage we selected this gorgeous Highland cabinet with shutter doors and iron hardware accents. I love bringing wood into spaces and this piece definitely adds some warmth and coziness to this large room. It’s a great place to store magazine books and other items that they want out of site!

These distressed wood candle holders add a little extra texture to the living room.

In the corner we created a great little area with the Aldridge side table and this gorgeous mirror and lamp. Having little moments like this around the room brings some personality to the space. Family photos, wall quotes and functional items like lighting really makes the room livable.

Natalie has a framed quote hanging on her wall. It’s often ascribed to Pablo Picasso:

“The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.”

I think that sums up this makeover perfectly…”give your gifts away” so that others can enjoy! It’s amazing how when design and love meet the result is a beautiful room with beautiful people!
