Refined Rustic Style Deck Décor

This rustic style deck is the expert work of Sandra Downie, who blogs at The Rustic Life. It’s her contribution to our Patio Style Challenge series here on The Home Depot Blog.

After using a pressure washer to clean her deck thoroughly, she got to work adding a new outdoor dining set, extra seating for guests and a small pergola.

The lovely wooden deck is a fabulous backdrop for this comfortable, rustic look. See how Sandra put it all together.

Living in New England can be a challenge when it comes to transitioning from winter to spring. We faced frost and snow during the time we were working on this Patio Style Challenge, but we prevailed just in time. Sometimes Mother Nature doesn’t get the memo that “Spring Has Sprung”. We knew going into this project we wanted to start it off with a sparkling clean deck. When the home was purchased last year, we didn’t get a chance to do it, so we figured what better time than now. DIY style of course.

A deck in need of a makeover

As you can see from the photos the deck was showing its age and green grime, and it was in bad need of some decorating.

Power Washing the Deck

Pressure washing a deck

We headed to our local Home Depot store, and ended up purchasing a Ryobi Power Washer and deck cleaning solution. We wanted a power washer that wasn’t too forceful in an armatures’ DIY hands, but strong enough to get the job done. This one was perfect! As a girl, I had no problem handling the pressure.

Assembly was easy. We followed the directions on how to use the power washer and deck cleaning solution together and we got the job done within two days (battling a thin sheet of ice along the way) the morning of the second day.

You can see how the thin sheet of ice sat on the deck overnight and darkened the other half of the uncleaned deck. The process went just as smooth on the second half as it did on the first. Even with the ice on top. We were very happy with how the power washer performed.

Sealing the Deck

Thompson's WaterSeal

To seal the deck, we chose to use Thompson’s Water Seal Timber Oil vs. a stain so that the beauty of the natural wood could shine through.

Styling the Deck

Now onto the fun part. Styling.

Refined Rustic Style Deck Décor

I first wanted to anchor the space with a bold outdoor rug and I found this Navy Medallion rug was exactly what I needed.

The Hampton Bay Posada Dining Set and the Aluminum Market Patio Umbrella in Cement worked together beautifully against the blue rug and set the tone for styling around where family would enjoy dinners and parties.

Outdoor dining table

I’m a big fan of layering functional dinnerware and I just LOVE how this blue melamine set layers with traditional glass plates used in the house. For me, the less glass used outdoors the better.

Rustic bar cart

I wanted to have a space where I could put beverages and dishes when I entertained. So we DIY’d this Industrial Rustic Bar Cart to help keep us organized.

Extra Deck Seating

Bench on rustic style deck

Seating, when you come from a big family, is always an issue. An easy way to ensure there is seating for all, is to build something that can hold multiple people at once instead of separate seats. Benches are a great way to do this. We built this bench incorporating some old barn wood we picked up in town.

Talk about upcycling. I accessorized with pretty outdoor pillows and flanked each side of the bench with these tall galvanized metal lanterns that double as side tables. The LED candles look beautiful in them both day and night.

The New Grill

Nexgrill Deluxe 6-Burner Grill

We needed a new and bigger grill. We got just that and then some with this Nexgrill Deluxe 6-Burner Grill. The fact that you could sear your steak and roast chicken on it was definitely a plus in my book for cooking for a large party. With my daughter’s graduation party inching closer, I know this is going to come in very handy.

Outdoor Art

Outdoor art: sign that reads "eat"

Speaking of food, how perfect is this EAT wall art. We made the letters out of the leftover barn wood that was used on the bench.

The Pergola and Outdoor Curtains

Small pergola on a rustic deck

One thing I really wanted was a pergola. This was a lot easier to build than one might think. We purchased all the pressure treated wood from The Home Depot and built it in three days. It was sealed in the same oil, as the deck. It’s a different color than the deck because the wood is newer.

The curtains are really paint drop cloths that we picked up from The Home Depot. The curtains were hung from standard closet rod sets we found at Home Depot. They too were stained. We had to cut them down to size on the sides, but they worked out pretty nicely to create a romantic little nook on the deck.

The galvanized lanterns we hung on either side of the pergola add a rustic touch and they look really pretty at night with candles lit in them. As for the seating underneath the pergola, we also found at The Home Depot this pair of Adelaide Eucalyptus Patio Dining Side Chairs. They are just the right size and this Natural Round Outdoor Pouf made for the perfect place to rest our feet a the end of a long day.

Small pergola with string lights on a deck

To add more rustic touches to the pergola, I wrapped dried grapevine around the top rafters. You can find this at your local craft store. To create mood at night and add extra lighting, I also incorporated one set of these patio café string lights.

We love the way the space looks at dusk.

When it’s dark, the beauty of this outdoor space feels even more magical. I’m so grateful to have been a part of this year’s Patio Style Challenge and to have found so many décor items making The Home Depot our one-stop shop for all our DIY and decorating needs. I hope you have found inspiration in creating your own outdoor oasis.
