Simple Tips for Rustic Farmhouse Holiday Decor

Hannah shares her tips for achieving this rustic farmhouse holiday decor in your home.

Farmhouse Holiday Decor

When decorating for Christmas, I like to stay very neutral and natural, opting for pine branches and vintage elements. I love for everything to look bright and cheery. Here are some of my tips to create some farmhouse holiday charm in your home, particularly in a master bedroom.

The Color Scheme

One of my biggest tips for achieving a farmhouse holiday look is to stick with natural decor. Because of our white walls, and all the rustic wood furniture we have throughout our house, colors really pop. I like to take advantage of that by using neutrals and one or two bold colors. You just want to make sure not to use too many loud tones that compete against each other.

One great way to achieve a coherent look around the room is to mix old textures with new ones, and spread out two to three main colors so there are consistent tones throughout the room.

Also consider unconventional ways to display holiday objects like ornaments. Hang them on a string up against a window, or place them in a basket. Here you see Christmas ornaments from Martha Stewart Living’s Winter Tiding collection in a metal bin.

The Garland

I am a huge lover of pines, so I love a good excuse to hang garlands of them in my house.

Here’s a little secret tip: I always mix real Christmas tree branches in with the pre-made garlands. It really brings them to life! Usually they will give you branches for free when you are purchasing a Christmas tree. I just tuck them in throughout the garland. Super easy, but it makes such a big difference!

And how cute are these little Christmas cars up against pine needles? I think I’m in love!

Textures

I love including meaningful heirloom items in decor, like this quilt my great grandmother made my for my wedding. It’s very personal, but it still has that eclectic feel.

Incorporating glass elements next to garlands and rustic textures can look lovely. I chose to put my collection of blue bottles up next to the red cars on my mantel, and I think it really created a perfect subtle look.

One of my favorite things to do when staging a space is creating layers to achieve a cozy feel. My husband thinks I am a pillow hoarder (and he is totally right!)

Artwork

One nice thing with word art, is that is a subtle display that doesn’t scream “Holidays!” With some pallets and plywood we created this long sign and decorated it with one of my favorite Christmas carols! It’s a super easy DIY if you have a drill, a saw, and a can of paint laying around.

Subtle Details

It’s all about the small details. That isn’t to say that you need a million little things going on. Quite the opposite! Just pick three or four delicate details you want to display in each room.

You don’t want elements competing for attention, so place them in natural looking places, like a nightstand, a bench, or shelf.

Overall, you just want to create one main focal area, and spread out the details throughout the rest of the space.

Wreaths

Wreaths aren’t just for outdoors! I decided to put the Champagne Glitter wreathes from Martha Stewart Living on my closet and master bathroom doors. This is probably the easiest way to dress up a space.
