The Bloggers of The Home Depot’s 2016 DIY Challenge

For the next installment of our DIY Challenge series, we put 15 skilled do-it-yourself bloggers to the test by challenging them to create a unique project. The catch? Each blogger was assigned a specific building material to incorporate into their project.

The result is a variety of creative DIY ideas that use lumber, millwork, concrete and piping. We’re excited to introduce the talented individuals that we’re partnering with for the 2016 DIY Challenge here on The Home Depot Blog.

First Row

Alexi is the Instagram junkie, Pinterest fanatic and DIY supporter behind Seeking Alexi, a blog hugely obsessed and wildly smitten with design, specifically graphic design, interior design and lifestyle design. Through her freelance design studio—Seeking Alexi Design—Alexi specializes in branding and identity work along with a wide spectrum of other services such as web design, blog design, app design, hand-lettering, wedding invitations and more. When Alexi is not working or blogging, she spends time watching “Shark Tank,” hiking, or taking road trips.

Brad founded Fix This Build That to share his passion and help you in your journey to build awesome stuff! After taking an Intro to Woodworking class in 2002, Brad developed a hobby that would turn into a life-long passion of building, creating and repairing. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned woodworker, his blog aims to bring you new projects, teach you new skills, or just give you a different way to look at things.

Chloe is the creative gal behind Boxwood Avenue, a website sharing expert entertaining tips, DIY projects, easy recipes and farmhouse living. Chloe aims to share the many forgotten joys of making something with your hands; be it Grandma’s apple pie, sewing a new dress, or putting together a thoughtful handmade gift. In 2014, Chloe was uprooted from Miu Miu to moo moo; now living on a cattle ranch with her Cowboy in a town of 99, she has adopted a newfound appreciation for minimalism. She finds joy in caring for her farm animals and creating an effortless life full of old-world traditions.

Second Row

Darnetha is a wife and mother to three amazingly active bambini. Her blog ChippaSunshine is a place for her to document her journey through life. Darnetha’s passion is for a simple life where she lives in the moment and enjoys. On her blog you will read everything from basic life happenings to decorating, cooking, inspirations and DIY projects.

Elisha is life-long DIYer who loves the smell of sawdust. She enjoys learning and is always looking to gain a new skill. She live in Gilbert, Arizona with her husband and twin boys. You can find her work at Pneumatic Addict where she shares in-depth tutorials on topics such as furniture building, home decor and home improvement.

Frank is the twenty-something maker and mastermind behind the blog Glued-N-Screwed. As a newly-minted fiancé, he also finds himself in the middle of a DIY lifestyle filled with “Honey, I’ve got an idea!” Passionate about resurrecting old tools and repairing things around the house (that weren’t necessarily broken to begin with), he relies on a mix of instinct, curiosity and guidance from the old pros to take his projects over the top.

Third Row

Jen is a performing songwriter by trade having released three albums, toured the world, and has licensed her music to national television shows, commercials and films. Most recently, Jen has added “DIY Blogger” to her eclectic resume. A musician, military wife and mother to two young children, Jen authors The House of Wood as her creative outlet for all things DIY and design where she documents her adventures in woodworking, furniture and interior design and home decor.

Katrina founded Chic Little House in 2009, where she blogs about interior DIY design. Katrina resides in Sacramento, California with her husband and their two children. She was inspired to blog and share the renovation journey of their small 1956 Rancher House. When she’s not blogging, Katrina can often be found scouring flea markets and thrift stores in hopes of finding the next vintage piece that needs some love. Katrina’s style is California Modern Casual which she considers a mix of classic, modern and vintage with a relaxed California vibe.

Kim blogs at a Girl and a Glue Gun where she puts her glue gun to good use (as well as her sewing machine, vinyl cutter, and tools!) She loves any good DIY project– especially fun colorful ones! She says she’s cheap (we prefer “thrifty”), and she is constantly trying to come up with awesome inexpensive and easy crafts that won’t break the bank! She lives in Idaho with her husband and three kiddos.

Fourth Row

Manda and her sister Caitlin co-founded The Merrythought, a Western New York-based lifestyle site devoted to simple living, in 2013. On the blog, they share many creative and useful DIY projects with a focus on natural and affordable materials. In addition to DIY, they also share recipes, fashion, home décor, travels, parties and bits of their daily lives.

Natalie is the founder, writer and photographer of the blog Relentless at Heart. Her blog sprung out of a hope to become more intentional in various areas of her life through documentation and sharing, but focuses most of her work on DIY/Thrifting. Natalie grew up being encouraged to work with her hands and the excitement stuck! Her husband shares the same passions, so needless to say their home is a constant DIY zone with one project or another – and they love it!

Rachel began studying art from a very young age and employs her artistic passion through her blog, Shades of Blue Interiors. Her blog is where she shares furniture makeovers, budget-friendly interior design, furniture build-plans, and DIY home improvement and decor. She is passionate about helping others create a space that reflects their personality through “collected” yet cohesive choices. She also thinks everyone should own and use a miter saw. She lives with her three kids and husband in the suburbs of St Louis, Missouri and loves spending free time watching her kids play soccer.

Fifth Row

Sam is a do-it-yourself blogger and author of DIY Huntress: a blog that specializes in basic woodworking projects, crafts and home improvement tips. As a PhD student on a strict budget, Sam believes in inspiring others to create new things without breaking the bank. Sam’s main goal is to inspire others to step out of their comfort zone and create something out of the box.

Serena is a blogger, entrepreneur, artist, thrifter, wife, and mother of three young sons. She had been named the 2016 Home + Garden Trendsetter of the Year, which won her the opportunity to speak at home shows nationally. Since 2012, she’s been inspiring readers on her blog Thrift Diving to decorate, improve, and maintain their home on a DIY budget. Thrift stores, power tools, and paint brushes have helped Serena and her readers transform their homes, one project at a time.

Ursula created her blog, Home Made by Carmona, to be nothing like your ordinary DIY blog. Her posts are chock full of practical DIYs and everyday solutions to make your home more functional, more beautiful and more uniquely you. Ursula shares innovative lifestyle improving ideas and budget friendly projects for every person and style.
