Fall Mantel Decorations With Succulents, Burlap and Copper

Lush green succulents, rough burlap and copper pipe pieces come together beautifully in these fall mantel decorations.

Charlotte Smith, who writes the blog, Ciburbanity, created such a warm, natural look for her fall mantel as part of our Halloween and Harvest Style Challenge here on The Home Depot Blog.

We sent her a few mystery boxes of harvest decorations to see what creative fall decorating ideas she’d come up with. As you’ll, her fall mantel is full of wonderful natural colors and contrasting textures, perfect for celebrating autumn.

Fall Mantel Decorations

We’ve been in our current house for a little over a year, and the mantels in the old part of the house just beg for holiday décor. And everyone knows, when your mantels start to beg, you’ve got to give ‘em what they want!

The warm wood tone of our mantel is the perfect complement to the traditional harvest color palette of oranges, olives, and reds. Don’t get me wrong, I love lots of color, but this mantel feels like fall waltzed in with a warm pumpkin spice latte and a plaid wool blanket.

I love using plants in holiday décor, and autumn is the perfect season with its array of mums and succulents so readily available. I’ve used both real and faux succulents on this mantel and, fingers crossed, I can keep them all alive until it’s time for the next holiday decorations!

The best tip I have for succulents is to ignore them — a nice bright room and a drop or two of water every so often is all these guys need!

Carving Faux Pumpkins to Hold Potted Plants and Lights

Fall mantel decorations wouldn’t be complete without pumpkins, so I created some pumpkin potted plant holders for the mantel.

To conceal the plastic pots, I grabbed a bunch of faux (polyfoam) pumpkins and gourds.

First, I traced the circumference of the pot onto the pumpkin/gourd, and then used a utility knife to ‘carve’ your pumpkin.

Disclaimer: This is messy. Be ready for bits of polyfoam to be everywhere.

I also carved out a few gourds to hold battery powered tea lights to place on the fall mantel.

Copper Garland

For the copper garland, I cut ½-inch  copper pipe into 4-inch lengths and strung them together three at a time.

Each trio will make a triangle… just string the nylon rope through each piece of pipe and then bring it back through the first length to secure the triangle.

Succulent Pennants

The copper garland coordinates with the burlap pennants I covered with faux succulent plants.

Using a glue gun, I attached each leaf to make individual little succulents on each flag of the garland.

Texture and Multi-levels

One thing I love to incorporate into décor whenever I can is texture.

To add some height, I used that beautiful bonfire log as a plant stand. The bark is a wonderful contrast to the smooth planks of the old wood floor.

A Succulent Terrarium

A simple glass container holds a succulent trio… add a little gravel and some succulent soil and anything can be a terrarium.

Framed Fall Wreath

Wreaths don’t have to go on the front door to make a big impression.

Use a small brad nail or a command strip hook to hang a fall wreath over existing artwork.

Voila! Easy framed wreath.

Mixing Colors and Sizes

The combination of the hard wooden mantel and the lovely metallic of the large and small lanterns with the softer greenery of all the plants and pumpkins is my favorite part of this decor.

I love the muted colors of those green and white pumpkins against the lovely green of the succulent leaves.
