You don’t have to go to a lot of trouble to create a spooky chic fireplace mantel for Halloween. All it takes is a few fun Halloween decor items strategically placed.
Alex Evjen of AVE Styles shows just what we mean with the Halloween mantel she styled for our Halloween Style Challenge. We sent her a mystery box of Home Depot Halloween decor items and let her do the rest.
Her mantel and hearth celebrate the holiday in sophisticated fashion, with just enough spookiness. Take a look for some inspiration for your own spooky chic Halloween mantel.
Creating a Spooky Chic Halloween Mantel
Here’s the truth. Other than a couple carved jack-o-lanterns, I’ve never decorated my home for Halloween until now. I love the holiday. It’s the most creative one there is. In fact, give any stylist a reason to be imaginative and dress up and we’re happy campers.
However, most Halloween decorations are orange, black and purple and clash with my neutral, warm style. Well, until now. Thanks to The Home Depot I was presented with a style challenge to think about how I could decorate my home in a chic way all while incorporating the spooky fun of Halloween.
A Boney Color Palette
When I opened up my Style Challenge box I immediately gravitated toward the bone white of the skeleton wolf and gunmetal color of the faux chain. They blended perfectly with the stone of my fireplace. I added a touch of black, and I realized I had my perfect color palette without orange and purple.
The Hearth and Inside the Fireplace
I placed my skeleton guard dog on the left of my fireplace and my black cat and white pumpkin with bats on the right. No fuss, and instant spooky style.
I also found some skull candles to place inside my fireplace. It’s way too hot to light a fire in Arizona, so I thought it would pretty to have a small glow from some candles. In addition to the spooky candles, I thought it would be funny to put pieces of a skeleton inside with the logs, and the rest of “Harry’s” bones (that’s what my husband Ryan named him) were placed in my basket with a pretty throw and layered pillows. “Night, night, Harry,” we say.
On the Mantel
Our mantel is the focal point of our family room where we watch television and play. On one side of the TV, I placed a battery-operated candelabra, a skeleton candle and a dome that glows different colors at night.
On the other side, I added a skeleton rat and a vintage looking witch telephone that says different things when you lift the receiver. It’s a playful combination that still looks chic during the day.
To connect both sides, I ran skull bulb lights and two 6ft. faux chains across the whole mantel.
To tie it all together, I put cotton cobwebs over the TV I also placed some on the mantel, fireplace and in the corner of the room along with an oversize web with lights.
What looks chic during the day, really looks spooky at night, especially when you add some smoke with a remote controlled fog machine. It’s so perfect for a scary movie night with Ryan. I must say, however, Elle now thinks the hearth is her stage for singing. Smoke, lights and props…I could see why she thinks that.
Mission accomplished! This spooky chic design required minimal DIY, and takes under an hour to put together.
