Pipe fitting projects are fun to complete, and they can add a cool industrial vibe to your home. In this pipe fitting project, Sam Raimondi of DIY Huntress shows us how she modified a pipe wine rack kit to be an awesome pipe lamp.
Pipe Fitting Project
Enter obligatory Anchorman quote about how much I love lamp… and then cue my second lamp project with The Home Depot!
Industrial lighting is in style right now. Pipe lamps are everywhere! But, buying them premade can be expensive. So, to help make industrial lighting affordable for every pocket, I partnered with The Home Depot to transform an LDR Pipe Decor Wine Rack Kit into an industrial light!
Just follow this step-by-step tutorial for this easy pipe fitting project.
Best part about this project is that the pipe fitting kit does all the heavy lifting for you by prepackaging the black pipe in a box. So, no guess work, no missing pieces, and one low price.
Here’s how I transformed an industrial wine rack into a cool new lighting piece.
Tools
Materials
- LDR Pipe Decor Wine Rack Kit
- Cree Dimmable LED Light Bulb
- Cord Set With Switch (3)*
- Westinghouse 2 in. Keyless Phenolic Socket*
- Electrical Tape*
- Rust-Oleum Hammered Paint
- WAD 2780 3½ in. x 3½ in x 2 in. Basswood Round Bun Foot Moulding
*Please work with a licensed professional on all electrical aspects of this project. Do not attempt to connect wiring for this lamp project without a professional.
Step 1
Lay out your wine rack to figure our how many tiers you want for your lamp. I chose three.
Step 2
If you have a bun foot with a screw insert, use pliers to remove the screw.
Step 3
Use a ½ in. drill bit to drill a hole through the center of your bun foot.
Step 4
Use the same drill bit to drill a hole through the side of the bun foot and to the opening in the center.
Step 5
Work with a licensed electrician or a certified professional to help with wiring your new lamp. Make sure to start by threading your lamp cord through the base.
Step 6
Once your wire is threaded, attach the base of your new lamp to the bun foot by screwing it in.
Step 7
Have your electrician splice your wires for new connections and thread them through your piping one layer at a time.
Step 8
Once you thread one wire through the first tier, have your electrician attach the wire to the socket, and install the socket inside the pipe with electrical tape.
Step 9
Continue Steps 5 through 8 until the lamp is complete.
Step 10
Install your light bulbs. I chose Cree Dimmable Light Bulbs for my project because they are low wattage, but super bright!
Step 11
Paint the base of your lamp.
Step 12
Light ’er up!
Now you can decorate in style and on a budget! How’s that for a bright idea?
