Indoor/Outdoor Patio With Colorful Painted Concrete Floor

Read on to see how she gave her special twist to the Patio Challenge.

Indoor/Outdoor Patio Oasis

I love how patios can come in all different shapes, sizes, and styles! Here in Florida, having a patio that is completely outdoors isn’t always useful. With the temperatures and humidity high for a large part of the year, having a indoor/outdoor style patio is just what we need! Our house happens to have a screened in back porch, which allows us to enjoy the outdoors while being shaded from the Florida sun.

A significant feature of our patio is the huge sliding glass doors on two sides. These doors can be opened up and slid aside to fully open our patio from our living room all the way through to the outdoors!

Because the patio is essentially an extension of the interior of our home, I wanted to make over the space to reflect a similar style. In addition, having an outdoor dining area was another priority. Above, you can see the outdoor couch we previously purchased. I thought it would be a great idea, but the reality of the matter is that we never really used it. Because our house is on the small side, I thought it would be nice to have an outdoor entertaining space that extends from our dining room and kitchen out to the patio. With the sliding doors, it’s just begging to serve that purpose!

Painted Concrete Floor

Concrete floor before smoothing

To start, we HAD to do something about the floor in our patio. Our patio space is concrete, but as you can see above, it was stamped with a pattern. The small pattern that was stamped into the concrete was a major dirt catcher. I had dreamed of smoothing out the concrete for years, and this was my chance. This was also a chance to stain the concrete for a more luxe appearance.

I am blessed to have a husband who is skilled with carpentry, tools, and more. I let him take control with the patio floor, and after a tool rental from The Home Depot, a few hours of toiling on the porch, and a LOT of cleanup to remove the concrete “mud,” we finally had a smooth floor to work with!

We used a concrete stain combination from Behr to spray the floor: Emerald Pool for the base, and Industrial Gray for the accent. After the dye was dry, we sealed it with a wet look sealer. The finished painted concrete floor reminds me of a pool – it’s relaxing, cool, and really ties in with the colors throughout the rest of our house.

Plants for the Patio

Once the floor was tackled, it was time to decorate! I don’t know why I’ve shied away from plants in the past, but I decided it was high time to embrace them to create a lush yet chic look for our space.

As soon as I laid eyes on the fiddle leaf fig plant and the corn plant, I knew they had to be a part of our patio. I mean, aren’t they spectacular?!?!

Spray-Painted Planters

Even though they make a statement on their own, I wanted to make them pop even more with the pots I was putting them into.

All it took was a fabulous basic planter and a can of metallic spray paint. I applied two even coats of the paint on each pot and was left with a shiny, modern look. I love the reflective ability of the pots – they even make the stained concrete floor even more amazing.

Of course, smaller plants were also necessary to fill the space and complete it.

I opted for a variety of textures and colors with a rubber plant and a spiky palm. I love the contrast against the huge fig plant leaves.

It’s not ALL about the plants, of course. I knew I had to give these galvanized metal lanterns a home in my patio paired with large flameless candles. Perfection! They complement the plants, but they also add a little bit of something extra to our simple wood sideboard—perfect for serving drinks and setting up other items for meals!

Patio Dining Set

Although we have a ceiling fan with a light for our porch, it never hurts to add a little bit of sparkle and ambiance, now does it?

These simple string lights were just the right look for our porch, and I love that they add a bit of whimsy and interest to the space. They are perfect at night for just the right amount of light for outdoor dining and entertaining.

The Customizable Patio Dining Set

Because the table is the centerpiece of our indoor/outdoor patio, I really wanted our Middletown 7-Piece Dining Set to shine. I love that the set is customizable: I knew the Canvas Sapphire material for the cushions would be a fantastic color to coordinate with our ocean-like patio floor.

The New Grill

KitchenAid 3-Burner Propane Gas Grill

It wouldn’t be an outdoor dining space without food and drink to go with it, now would it? We absolutely LOVE to grill, and the beauty of living in Florida is that we can do it year round!

Our new KitchenAid 3-Burner Propane Gas Grill is going to get a lot of use as the spring and summer roll out. There is even a side burner on this grill, which will be fun to use (to keep sauces warm…to make baked beans….so many options)! Our patio area actually extends beyond the screened in porch to a square area right outside—the perfect spot for our grill to sit!
