This DIY birdhouse is a classic weekend woodworking project. Build it on your own, or make it a fun activity to do with your son or daughter. Then hang the birdhouse in your backyard for the whole family to enjoy.

How to Build This DIY Birdhouse
Materials
- 1 in. x 12 in. x 6 ft. clear pine, ¾ in. finished thickness
- 1½ in. finish nails
- 5/16 in. x 4 in. dowel
- Wood glue
- Paint or Stain (optional – we used Behr Marquee in Lap Pool Blue)
Tools
- Drill
- Drill bit set
- 1½ in. hole bit
- Sand paper or electric sander
- Hammer
- Tape measure
- Circular saw or hand saw
Cut List
- A – Bottom 5 in. x 7 in., qty. 1
- B – Sides 5 in. x 5½” in., qty. 2
- C – Front/Back Panels, 7¼ in. x 11 ½ in., qty. 2
- D – Top 9½ in. x 8½ in., 32 degree bevel 1 edge 8½ in.
- E – Top 8¾ in. x 8½ in., 32 degree bevel 1 edge 8½ in.
- F – Perch 5/16 in. x 1½ in. dowel
You can use any lumber, but we recommend clear pine from The Home Depot because of its nice milled finish.
Step 1: Cut Pine
Cut down the 1 in. x 12 in. x 6 ft. clear pine into pieces listed in the cut list above.
NOTE: The angle at the top is 62 degrees.
NOTE: The tops are cut at 31 degrees.
NOTE: Steps 2-6 below outline how to cut the five-sided front/back panels for the bird house.
Step 2 – Cut Front and Back Panels
Cutting the five-sided front and back panels of the birdhouse. Start with 7¼ in. x 11½ in. piece.
Step 3 – Measure
On both edges, measure 5 in. up from the bottom and mark.
Step 4 – Mark
Make two marks on the bottom edge that are 1⅛ in. in from each side. This will give you a 5 in. space centered on the bottom.
Step 5 – Make Bottom Cut Lines
Draw a line between the two points on the bottom edge and the marks that are 5 in. high on the sides. These are your cut lines. Once cut, this should give you a 5 in. bottom edge and two 5 in. sides.
Step 6 – Make Top Cut Lines
Now find the center of the top edge and draw a line from the center down to the left and right edge of the 5 in. side. These are your cut lines for the top. Once cut, you will have your five-sided front/back panels (C) of the birdhouse.
Step 7 – Drill Entrance
Drill a 1½ in. hole into one of the front panels (C) for the bird entrance. The hole should be 5 in. up from the bottom and centered horizontally. Use a 1½ in. Milwaukee hole saw, which fits into any drill motor.
Step 8 – Nail Panels
Nail the front/back panels (C) and sides (B) into the bottom (A) of the birdhouse.
NOTE: Be sure to squeeze a thin line of wood glue on all adjoining edges before nailing.
NOTE: You should now have front, side and back pieces completed and standing upright on your flat working surface.
Step 9 – Nail Roof
Squeeze another thin line of wood glue on top of both front/back panels (C). Nail both top panels (D) and (E) onto the front/back panels (C). Make sure that the beveled edges make a point at the top of the birdhouse roof.
Step 10 – Drill Perch
For the perch, drill a hole 5/16 in. thick and ½ in. deep on the front panel (C) under the circular opening. This mark should be centered horizontally and 3¼ in. up from the bottom, or roughly 1 in. under your circular opening.
Step 11 – Glue Perch
Squeeze a dot of wood glue onto one end of the wooden dowel (F). Insert this glued end into the small hole on the front piece. You now have a perch for the birdhouse opening!
Step 12 – Sand Edges
Let the glue dry for a few hours and then sand any rough edges.
After you finish, sand with the orbital palm sander using 220-grit sand paper.
Step 13 – Decorate
Now paint, stain or embellish your birdhouse to your liking!
Step 14 (optional) – Add Chimney
Get creative! Add a small wooden chimney.
Step 15 – Hang in Yard
Hang or place the birdhouse in your yard and enjoy!
