Here are two painting projects that can add color and durability to your backyard and deck. Staining a fence is a fairly easy way to make a big difference in the look of your backyard,.
This is also the best way to preserve your wood fence and prevent it from turning gray. If you have weathered wood, please follow the cleaning procedures detailed in this entry before beginning.
After we stain the wooden fence, we’ll turn a fold out workbench into a convenient grilling prep table or buffet. A coat of paint dresses it up and helps it stand up to the elements.
Staining a Fence
Materials for Staining a Fence
- Wood stain (transparent, semi transparent or solid). We used: BEHR Premium Terra Cotta Semi-Transparent Wood Stain
- 4 in. Paint brush
- Paint tray
- Pad applicator
- Drop cloth (optional)
Step 1: Pour Paint
If needed place drop cloth down over surfaces you’d like to protect. Open can of stain and pour into paint tray.
Step 2: Saturate Applicator
Saturate pad applicator with stain.
Step 3: Apply Stain
Apply stain to fence. Press the pad firmly against the wood, but not so much that the stain runs down the fence.
Step 4: Coat All Surfaces
Continue working pad up down fence until all surfaces are coated.
Step 5: Fill Small Areas
For areas the pad applicator can’t reach, use the paint brush to apply your stain. Make sure all accessible areas of the fence are covered.
Step 6: Apply Additional Coats
Allow first coast of stain two hours minimum to dry before applying second coat. Repeat Steps 2-5 for the second coat.
Once complete you’ll have a beautifully protected fence.
