DIY Chalkboard Welcome Sign and Sign Post

DIY Chalkboard Welcome Sign and Sign Post

Every front porch needs a welcome sign! We have a tutorial for a DIY chalkboard welcome sign and a sign post to hold it. Add a holiday message to the welcome sign at Christmas, and change the message as the seasons change. We’ve added a little extra appeal, too, by using cabinet knobs to decorate the welcome sign.

Just follow the step-by-step instructions to build your own welcome sign.

Supplies

Step 1

Measure and Cut Wood

Cut List

4 x 4 Post – cut to 54 in.

Large base (made from 1 x 8 white board) – 7¼-in. square

Small base and top (made from 1 x 6 white board) – 5½-in. square

Sign (made from 1 x 8 white board) – cut to 18-in. wide

Sign holder (made from 1 x 2 white board) – cut to 17½-in. wide

Once all cuts are complete, lightly sand to eliminate the rough edges.

Tip: If you do not have a miter saw or table saw, your local Home Depot store can make the cuts for you. They also have a tool rental service, which is a great way to try out tools at home before purchasing your own.

Step 2

Determine Knob Placement

We’re using these really cute bubble glass knobs to hold the sign on the post, but there are many other cabinet knobs that would look great, too. Before you begin painting, you will want to mark and pre-drill the holes for the knobs.

Using a ruler, measure and mark your knob placement. The knobs are 1½-in. in from both sides, and ¾ in. down from the top.

Using a 5/32 drill bit, pre-drill your holes into the wood sign. Repeat on the sign holder board.

Lightly sand to remove any rough edges around the holes.

Paint

Paint all wood pieces. We chose a charcoal gray chalked paint for its neutral color that will coordinate well with any seasonal décor.

Apply two coats for optimal coverage, allowing paint to dry between coats.

Step 4

Paint the Welcome Sign Chalkboard

Use painter’s tape to mark a border for the chalkboard. Using a sweeping motion, apply thin coats of chalkboard spray paint. Allow paint to set between coats. I ended up applying 4 coats. Carefully remove the tape once the paint is dry.

Assemble the Sign Post

5a) Apply wood glue to one end of the post. Place one of the small bases on to the post end. Press firmly to ensure proper adhesion. Use a brad nailer and 1½-in. brad nails for additional support.

Follow the same steps to attach the larger base.

Use a damp towel to remove any excess glue.

Attach the Hook to the Sign Post

Use a ruler to measure and mark the placement of your hook. The center of this post is 1¾ in. from either edge.

Mark the exposed mount holes. Using a 3/32 drill bit, predrill your holes.

Using the included hardware and a drill, screw in the mounting bracket.

Slide the hook over the bracket.

Attach the Welcome Sign

To determine where to position the sign, hang a wreath on the hook to make sure the sign was not hidden by the bottom of the wreath.

Tip: Lightly mark the position of the sign holder on your post.

Apply wood glue to the back of the sign holder. Press firmly on to the post to set the glue. Secure to the post using your brad nailer and 1½-in. brad nails.

To attach your chalkboard sign, use the longer screws that came included with your bubble glass knobs. Insert the screws through the back of the sign holder, and screw on your knobs. Carefully tighten using a Philips head screw driver.
