Some people love the fuss of decorating for Christmas. Others, not so much. These no fuss holiday decorations are by Nicole White Quinn of Nicole White Designs Interiors, who definitely in the keep-it-simple category.
She took part in our Holiday Style Challenge series here on the Home Depot Blog. We sent her a mystery box of Home Depot holiday decorations and a Home Depot gift card, and she did the rest.
Take a look at how much you can do with a couple of wreaths and a well appointed beverage table to create a cheery atmosphere for holiday entertaining.
No Fuss Holiday Decorations
Here I am, decorating my dining room/lounge for my very first Home Depot Style Challenge and laughing my way through the irony of it all. You see, I am among the rare breed of interior designers who shy away from decorating for the holidays (yes, yes, insert a shameful face here).
Before my son Xavier was born four years ago, the only holiday decor I could muster was a string of lights over a window in our old condo, and a wreath on the front door. Done and done. Since his birth, and mostly nudged by his grandma, a holiday decor aficionado, we’ve decorated a tree for the mountain of gifts he receives from said grandma.
So this challenge has been a catalyst to help me, and I’m sure there are many like me, who love the look of a well designed home for Christmas, but want to do so with as little fuss as possible.
The Space
Our dining room/lounge was the perfect space, since it’s not your traditional dining room with a large table and six to eight chairs. We have a white round tulip table, a banquette bench and some chairs, and that was pretty much it. Once we got our boxes and gift card from Home Depot for the Challenge, I knew the one splurge would be a console we could use as serving buffet/bar cart when entertaining, or as a place to add some great decor throughout the rest of the year.
I settled on the Anjou Console Table from the Home Depot’s sister site, Home Decorators Collection. I liked its simple lines, and I thought the washed oak color would be a great contrast to our black bamboo floors. I especially loved that it has a bottom shelf to load up on beverages or platters during the holidays.
A Gold Christmas Wreath
Once that was settled, it was time to figure out how best to use the other goodies we were sent for the challenge. My heart skipped a beat when I opened the box to see this gold holiday wreath inside. I knew immediately it would be placed in front of the mirror above the console since the mirror would help bounce the gold and light from the wreath around the room.
We used sisal rope for a bit of texture to hang the wreath. Aka, one very quick and easy DIY. You simply measure your preferred length of the sisal rope, cut, tie a knot to your liking and hang in place.
A great detail about all the decorative items that arrived is that they all used LED lights, and are all battery operated, including the candles. There’s no need to struggle to hide wires or worry about lighting candles, especially when you have young ones around.
The Beverage Table
I’ve long admired these etched copper lanterns. They’re a perfect fit for the console as the antique copper adds some metallic bling for the holidays.
This beverage dispenser from The Home Depot was a great way to have our console function as a bar cart as well. We styled it with an antique copper tray to house bottles of bubbly and wine glasses.
The Dining Table
Let’s chat about this dining table shall we?
I styled for a seating of five, but as small as our table is, we can seat up to seven. I’ve been looking for the perfect piece of art for above the bench, but it turned out to be a perfect spot for this second holiday wreath we received. The hint of snow on the wreath makes our little one swoon as he’s long wished to see snow, which clearly won’t be happening anytime soon in our very warm state of Florida.
I wanted our tablescape to be as true to our sensibilities as possible, simple, clean lines with splashes of color, but still be festive. That meant adding layers and various textures with fabric, glass, fresh flowers, a framed image of Xavier’s first holiday artwork, and metallic finishes starting with these gold table runners.
Fo another hint of gold, I used some painters tape at different heights on these bubble glass hurricane lanterns rope vases. Then sprayed with Rust-Oleum Specialty Metallic Gold Spray Paint for an immediate hint of festive glamour.
Simple DIY Place Cards
For another quick and easy DIY project, I used paint color sample strips for the name cards and a gold Sharpie pencil. I simply folded the cards in half, then scribbled our names as dictated by Xavier. Then I placed them within these holiday pine cones that sit atop a thank you card for guests.
Our dining room is a shared space with our living room/lounge, so we connected the two spaces by adding touches of gold and silver for the holidays.
The Gift Wagon
We used our last holiday treat from the Home Depot to spruce up this vintage radio flyer wagon. My husband used it as a toddler, and my mother-in-law recently shipped it to Xavier who zips it around the house non-stop. Adding the garland here as a place to store extra gift boxes, or as an alternative to a Christmas tree, is a great way to incorporate a family heirloom into your holiday decorations, making it as personal as possible.
And there you have it. A modern, glammed up, yet friendly space for us to entertain this holiday season. Thanks to The Home Depot for helping me get these rooms pulled together at last, and to my assistants, Debbie (who chimed in from afar with styling tips) and Ximena, who worked tirelessly into the wee hours of the night to help me finish the Challenge and took these amazing photos.
