Spray-Painted DIY Holiday Gift Wrap

Spray-Painted DIY Holiday Gift Wrap

Nole Garey of Oh So Beautiful absolutely loves gift wrap and has a knack for creating her own unique patters. We invited her to take part in our Holiday Style Challenge. We sent Nole a mystery box of Home Depot Christmas decorations along with a Home Depot gift card to get her started on her Christmas decorating.

Combining her love of gift wrap and her talent with design, she used supplies from The Home Depot to repurpose packing paper into spray-painted DIY holiday gift wrap in pretty hues of coral, gold and champagne.

I absolutely LOVE gift wrap and have an unhealthy amount of it squirreled away in my office. I even use my favorite wrapping paper patterns as drawer liners and artwork! But I have rather nontraditional taste when it comes to the holidays, and traditional patterns of Christmas trees and candy canes just don’t really fit my style. It was so much fun to create something completely custom and unique.

Read on to discover how I created the spray painted holiday gift wrap!

My personal style tends to gravitate towards bright colors with metallic accents and whimsical abstract painterly patterns. I drew inspiration from my Color +Pattern Pinterest board and set out to see if I could create something with an abstract painterly vibe. I turned to my favorite crafting material – good old spray paint – and I couldn’t be happier with the results!

I love for holiday decorations to sparkle and shine so I knew I wanted to incorporate metallic shimmer – but in a sophisticated and subtle way. I’m also not really a traditional red and green kind of girl, so I layered Rust-Oleum’s Metallic Pure Gold and Champagne Mist spray paint over bright coral and deep raspberry pink spray paint on 24-in. square packing paper. The layers of spray paint come together to create such a beautiful and soft texture. Add in a layer of gold glitter spray paint at the end and you have the perfect amount of sparkle!

I created a few other versions using different color combinations including fluorescent pink spray paint paired with silver glitter spray paint and light blue spray paint with metallic pearl mist spray paint. Even matte black spray paint with metallic champagne mist and silver glitter looks amazing. You really can’t go wrong with any combination of your favorite colors and metallic shades! You could even do several sheets in different shades of the same color for an ombré effect!

I finished the gift wrap with cotton ribbons made from painting rags for smaller gifts, copper hobby wire and neon pink twine for larger gifts, and gift tags made from spray painted paint chips. And the entire project couldn’t be easier to make!

Step 1

Lay a sheet of packing paper on a flat surface outdoors or in a well-ventilated workspace. Spray thin coats of spray paint over the paper, starting with the darkest color and continuing with lighter colors, metallic paint, and glitter paint until you’ve achieved a desirable result.

Allow the paper to dry completely.

Step 2

To make the cotton ribbon, and make small cuts with your scissors at 1-in. intervals along the bottom edge of a painting rag.

Pull the fabric apart at those cuts to rip the painting rag into 1-in. strips.

Step 3

To make the gift tags, spray metallic paint (I used Rust-Oleum Champagne Mist) along the top edge of paint chips.

Allow the paint chips to dry completely.

Use scissors or a craft punch to cut out gift tags in a shape of your choice. Write the recipient’s name using a Sharpie or a white paint pen.

Step 4

Once the wrapping paper is dry, cut it down to the size of your gift or box and wrap your gift. Add the cotton ribbon, copper wire or neon twine, a gift tag, and finish with a sprig of greenery!
