Cozy and Inviting Front Porch Christmas Decor

Cozy and Inviting Front Porch Christmas Decor

Even a small front porch deserves some holiday love. Katrina Sullivan, of Chic Little House, made the most of her space with her front porch Christmas decor.

This is part of our Holiday Style Challenge here on The Home Depot Blog. We sent Katrina some Home Depot Christmas decorations to get her started. She added in some plants and a fresh coat of paint for her patio chairs to complete the look.

I’m so excited to be a part of The Home Depot’s Holiday Style Challenge. My challenge was for front porch Christmas decor. We have small front porch, but I had big plans to transform the space into a little destination, right outside our front door. My goal for my front porch was to make it cozy, inviting and a perfect spot for drinking coffee in the mornings and sipping cocoa at night.

I was sent some Christmas goodies from The Home Depot, to help kick-off my Christmas front porch makeover, including a pretty wreath for my front door. The Home Accents Woodland Tales wreath, came pre-lit and is battery operated, and has realistic branches. While I love real wreaths, I love that I can use this wreath all season long and not worry about it drying out in warm fall and winter months in Northern California. I customized my wreath using an array of gold ornaments from The Home Depot in different sizes and finished the wreath with a simple cream bow.

I framed my front door with the 12 ft. Home Accents Garland, I’m in love with this garland. It’s pre-lit and battery operated. My new favorite Christmas lights are pre-lit and battery operated; it honestly makes decorating outdoors so much easier (no extension cords, yay!). The 12 ft.garland was the perfect size garland to frame my 36 in. door.

While stocking up on goodies to deck my front porch, I stopped in The Home Depot’s Garden Center and picked up a few live plants perfect for my front door. I came home with two rosemary bushes that smell incredible and a Norfolk Pine that is so pretty. I framed my door with above the brick on our patio with garland. I love how realistic the garland is.

We have an aqua bench on our front porch, which I’ve grown tired of and decided to give it a paint-over for the Holiday Style Challenge.

This was a quick and easy makeover, which is perfect to tackle during the holiday months.

Here’s the quick breakdown of the makeover, which only takes an afternoon to complete:

  • Clean wood bench with soapy water and allow to dry
  • Lightly sand bench
  • Spray paint bench with Rust-Oleum primer until fully covered
  • I used a Home Right Paint Sprayer to paint the bench, which is such a huge time-saver. Over the summer, I gave my outdoor dining room furniture a makeover using this sprayer, and the results where amazing. I painted my bench the same color as my patio furniture– Onyx Black by Glidden. The color is a deep black that is richer in color than a basic black.
  • Quick Tip: When using a paint sprayer, make sure to watch for drips and spray in light even coats to build the paint up over time

I love how the bench turned out. It looks perfect on our patio with the rich, deep black contrasting with the lighter brick color. Never underestimate the power of paint!

Last year, I built a BBQ Grill Cart for a Home Depot store DIY Workshop, I hosted. We use this cart all the time on our patio, but now that the weather is slowing changing in Northern California, I thought it made perfect sense to use the cart on our front porch.

The cart is the perfect size to add additional holiday cheer on our front porch. Above the cart I hung a twin version of the wreath on our front door.

On the cart I used a mixture of real burning candles and flameless LED candles. This is my first time using faux candles, and I love them. The Home Accents candles look real, flicker and are battery operated. A huge plus is that the batteries are included and you can put them on a timer.

When walk I up my front pathway to my front porch, I’m in love with how everything flows and it feels so welcoming. Plus, did I mention how incredible the sage smells? The sage bushes are one of my favorite porch additions and a must for the holidays.

Below are my quick tips for getting your porch ready to enjoy for the holidays:

  • Give your front door and porch a quick cleaning and wipe down surfaces and remove cobwebs
  • Mix in real pine/evergreen branches to faux garland and wreaths to create a more realistic look
  • Use battery-operated garland for a clean cord-free look
  • Layer in lighting with pre-lit garland and LED candles in vases
  • Place a large basket outside to hold blankets and up the cozy factor

As a small home dweller, I believe in using the spaces inside your home with intention that also goes for the outside of your home. Just like the inside of you home should feel welcoming, outside spaces should also reflect that same feeling.

I’m so thrilled to transform our rarely used front porch into a cozy retreat to enjoy just in time for the holidays. Since decorating our front porch for Christmas, we’ve already enjoyed a few evenings watching the sun set.
