It’s good to push yourself out of your craft and DIY comfort zone. That’s what happened when Jenn Menteer of My Fabuless Life created this cool concrete decorative bowl.
She took on this project as part of our DIY Challenge here on The Home Depot Blog. She agreed to create a fun DIY project for us without knowing what the main material would be, but you’d never know this was her first time to work with concrete.

DIY Concrete Bowl
When The Home Depot asked me if I would be willing to participate in a DIY Challenge using a mystery material, I jumped at the chance and quickly said yes.
Then they said that the material was going to be concrete, and I started an inner, mini-freak out. Out of the four possible items that they had mentioned in our initial discussions, concrete was the one I had never worked with, and quite frankly, was a little intimidated by.
Well, guess who has a new favorite DIY material?!! This girl. There are so many things you can do with it, and it’s a great way to bring a natural, primitive element to your décor.
One of my favorite tricks for easy seasonal décor, is to use bowls and baskets and just fill them with seasonal items. In the spring and summer, bright moss balls or succulents work great, pumpkins in the fall, and for Christmastime: candles, fresh greenery, and ornaments—all of those things that really bring that holiday feeling.
One of my other favorite things is a good, primitive-style bowl that brings that natural element into your décor.
So today, I’m going to show you how to make a simple, rustic, concrete coffee table bowl. This project is so quick, and so simple that even the kids get in on the action.
Materials
- Quickcrete Fast Drying Concrete
- 1 large Plant Liner or Plastic Bucket (for forming your concrete bowl)
- 1 smaller Plant Liner or Plastic Bucket (for forming the inside of the bow)
- Plastic Wrap
- Plastic Gloves
- Water for mixing concrete
- Old knife or spoon for mixing concrete
- Cans or rocks (something for weighting)
I started by purchasing several different types of buckets and plant liners so I could play around a bit and see which I preferred. I ended up using a large plant liner and a plastic bucket from the paint section. Once you’ve chosen your “form” for your bowl, fill it about ⅔ full of the concrete powder.
After you’ve filled it with the dry concrete, add the water in a little at a time and stir the concrete until you get a fairly stiff, thick consistency. Be sure to stir the concrete well, and stir up the dry parts from the bottom and sides so that the entire mixture is wet.
Smooth the concrete mixture out evenly in the bowl.
Take your second, smaller bucket, and put some plastic wrap on the underside. It doesn’t need to stick to the bottom of the bucket, it will just form a barrier between the concrete and the top bucket so that it’s easier to remove the top one once the concrete bowl is formed. Press the top bucket firmly into the concrete mixture and press down as far as possible to form the hole for the inside of the bowl. Place the cans or rocks inside the bucket to weight it down while the concrete hardens.
Using gloves or a plastic bag over your hand, smooth the outside edges of the cement bowl.
Allow the concrete to harden for one to two hours, and once the concrete is firm, but wet to the touch, remove the inner bowl. Then allow the rest of the concrete to harden completely. Once the concrete is hard, cut the outer bucket or bowl off.
It’s as easy as that!
I think I may have a new concrete addiction, because this project literally took me about 15 minutes to put together, and then just some patience while I waited for it to dry.
