Painting a Brick Fireplace

Painting a Brick Fireplace

Red brick does not have to be a permanent, unchangeable feature in your home. Brick can be painted to update and lighten up the look of your home. Follow the below steps to find out how easy a project this can be.

How to Paint a Brick Fireplace

Materials

Step 1: Prep your surface

There are different recommended cleaning methods.

The most simple is to use vinegar.

  1. Spray undiluted vinegar onto the brick
  2. Scrub it with a brush
  3. Use a towel to soak up the vinegar
  4. Spray with water to rinse
  5. Towel the brick dry

If your brick is especially dirty and in bad shape, you might consider other methods, including using trisodium phosphate or even oven cleaner.

Find the right cleaning method for your brick, clean, and allow the brick to dry completely before painting.

Step 2: Prep the area

Lay plastic sheeting, and tape off any areas you are not painting.

Step 3: Fill holes with caulk (if needed)

If your brick has holes or deep scratches, fill them with caulk. Flatten and smooth the caulk with a wet paper towel.

Allow the caulk to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 4: Apply primer

Spray the brick with the KILZ Complete Spray Primer. Doing so will ensure that any existing stains do not seep through your paint in addition to creating an ideal surface for paint to adhere to.

Allow the primer to dry completely before you begin painting.

Step 5: Paint the brick

Cut in along edges, and brush in deep crevices with your paint brush first, and then roll on your paint color. Allow first coat to dry for two hours before applying a second coat, if necessary or desired.

Dress for the holiday season and enjoy the new look of your fireplace space.
