Decorating Small Spaces for the Holidays

One of our favorite holiday traditions here at The Home Depot is the Holiday Style Challenge! We send out mystery boxes filled with holiday décor items to our talented DIY & decor bloggers and challenge to creatively style a room in their house.

This year, a few of our Style Challenge participants had smaller spaces, but still made the most of their holiday décor! Here are just a few of the ways our bloggers brought holiday cheer to every corner of their homes.

If you’re tight on space this holiday season, choose a smaller tree and add seasonal touches throughout your space. Darling Down South’s Cynthia Hoyt wowed us with this seasonal kitchen makeover! She transformed her kitchen island into a festive, yet functional tablescape and placed a small lit porch tree at the end.

Cynthia added small boxwood wreaths adorned with traditional red bows that pop off the white upper pantry cabinets. When decorating small spaces, Cynthia advises incorporating unexpected bursts of color and texture wherever you can, like hanging kissing balls from pendant lights.

Even in a smaller area there’s always room for a bar! Cynthia tucked one just around the corner from her main living area. She extended her festive decorations to create a seasonal vignette centered around a makeshift bar cart and a miniature Christmas tree. Small details really make the space, like elegant bar accessory styling with snowflake ceramic lanterns and mini reindeer.

Blogger Lauren Kelp of LaurenKelp.com created a festive holiday display in her living room. Her recent move to a tiny house meant she needed high-impact decorations that didn’t overpower the space, so she kept the design minimal yet polished. By choosing her wreath, holiday swag and porch trees from the same Martha Stewart collection, she was able to incorporate as many holiday elements as possible without feeling too crowded.

Lauren created her custom-sized mantel greenery by joining together smaller swag pieces until she found the perfect size. Her other tips for going big with design in smaller spaces include nestling two porch trees into a corner at different heights, creating visual depth, and using beautifully wrapped presents as part of your decor!

Katie Alberter, Little House of Four,  played with bold contrasting colors by mixing bright red, black and white to make a huge impact on one wall. She built a custom pair of whitewashed Craftsman-style boxes to elevate the pre-lit porch trees and nestled torn red flannel at the base to complement the red ornament wreath.

To decorate her mantle, Katie used a vintage window and colorful garland to highlight the rustic vintage-style advent calendar. A herd of reindeer figures with flannel scarves look out onto the room. By using bold colors and thoughtful decor items, Katie created a cozy and welcoming holiday atmosphere that only took up vertical space!

We loved seeing how our bloggers brought their holiday style to life showing that you don’t have to compromise on style even when space is limited. We hope these ideas inspire you to transform your small space into a festive holiday display that shows off your creativity and personality!
