Tools

  • Miter Saw

This step-by-step project will show you just how easy it is to create your own stocking box holders.

Step 1: Measure and Cut Wood

For each box, you will need to make the following wood cuts:

  • (1) 1 x 8 board at 8½ in.
  • (2) 1 x 6 boards at 8½ in.
  • (2) 1 x 6 boards at 5¾ in.

Five stocking boxes were built for this project, but you can build as many or as few as you need for your mantel.

After all your cuts are complete, lightly sand all edges. We used a sanding block, but an electric sander would work too. Wipe off any sawdust after you are finished sanding.

Step 2: Stain

Apply a thin coat of stain to each piece of wood using a foam brush or wiping cloth. We chose Minwax’s English Chestnut stain. Let the stain sit for about five minutes, then wipe off the excess stain with a clean rag. Repeat these steps for the shelf.

Let stain dry before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Assemble

Apply wood glue to the bottom edge, back side of the top (this is the 1 x 8 board). Place the 1 x 6 x 8½in board on the edge and press firmly on this piece to set the glue. Repeat with the other three sides, to complete the box. Secure to the post using your Brad Nailer and 1½ in. brad nails.

Note: We left the bottom of the box open since it would not be visible once placed on the mantel.

Step 4: Add Hardware

Use a ruler or measuring tape to measure and mark the placement of your hook. Since our board was 8½ in. wide, we measured and placed the hook mounting hardware at 4¼ in. from one side. Mark the exposed mount holes. Using a 3/32 in. drill bit, pre-drill your holes.

Using the included hardware and a drill, screw in the mounting bracket. Slide the hook over the bracket.

You will repeat the same process for the decorator wall plate. Your wall plate will come with mounting hardware that works specifically with outlets, so we attached it to the stocking box with extra wood screws that we had.

Note: Since the wall plates were used as name plates to identify each stocking box, we pre-cut small pieces of paper to 1½ in. x 3 in. Then, attach them to the back of the wall plate using tape before attaching the wall plate to the wood.
