Copper pipe might not be the first material you’d think of when you’re decorating your mantel for fall, but Haneen Matt of Haneen’s Haven makes it the focus of her fall mantel decor.
This is her contribution to our Halloween and Harvest Style Challenge series. We sent a few boxes of Home Depot harvest decorations to spark her ideas, and then let her come up with the fall styling.
As you’ll see, her copper pipe indoor arbor is a unique and inspired way to give her living room and fireplace mantel a shining fall look.
Copper Pipe in Fall Mantel Decor
I’m so excited to have participated in this fall’s Home Depot Halloween and Harvest Style Challenge! This is my absolute favorite time of year; so much so that my first-born’s name is Autumn! I didn’t hesitate when asked to participate, and as soon as I was assigned “mantel” my wheels started turning.
There’s nothing like roaming the aisles of The Home Depot to get a DIYer’s imagination running wild. I knew I wanted to build some sort of structure/arbor to surround the fireplace. I envisioned wrapping twigs around it, and when I walked through plumbing supplies and came across copper pipes. The color spoke to me, and I knew it’d be perfect for the warm, autumnal look I was going for.
Copper Pipe Indoor Arbor
I’ve never worked with copper before, but the challenge seemed fun! I struggled a bit, but I learned a lot so overall it was a positive experience.
I sketched out my plan and knew I needed two 8 ft. pieces on each side, and two 5 ft. pieces across the top. Home Depot has 5 ft. copper pipes, so the top pieces were an easy find. For the sides, I bought 10 ft. pipes and had them cut down to 8 ft. to fit under my ceilings. I bought pressure tees and 90-degree street elbows to connect it all.
I loved the black planters from The Home Depot’s garden section. I really thought they had a cool Halloween vibe (the detail on them reminded me of iron graveyard gates), but they’re neutral enough to use for other seasons.
I used Styrofoam inside the planters to stick the pipes into, and had my six year old hold them in place while I poured sand to fill the rest!
Hey, if a six year old can help with this, anyone can do it!
Branches and Pumpkins
Once the structure was complete, it was time to decorate! I tied twigs to the pipes and stuck mini faux pumpkins throughout for little extra touches. Then I went a little crazy adding more pumpkins everywhere else!
Books on the Mantel
Books are my current go-to/favorite filler for anything! Throughout the summer, I had a huge collection of vintage green books across my mantel. For this project, I decided I still wanted to incorporate them, so I turned them around to expose the pages for a neutral, textured look.
I suggest when displaying pumpkins, to spread them in groups of odd numbers and at different levels. The uneven piles of books made this easy!
I especially love the burlap pumpkin from The Home Depot.
Copper Lanterns and Wreath
I completed the look with the large copper lanterns, more books on the hearth, and a pretty red wood curl wreath tied to the fireplace doors. I love that this will take us right through Thanksgiving!
