Skeletons, skulls and bones are go-to decorations for Halloween decorations – but thinking outside the box with how you place, accent and incorporate them will elevate your décor game. We loved seeing how our Halloween Style Challenge participants came up with fun, creative ways to bring decorating with bones back to life!
Above, we see how Alex Evjen of AVE Styles created a distinctive stylish look by sticking to blacks, whites, greys and beiges when creating mini Halloween tableaux around her spooky chic mantel. Above, you can see how she artfully arranged this skull and bones (which she named Harry) to peek out of her throw pillow basket, highlighting the neutral tones in her design.
In the shadowy darkness of her fireplace, Alex laid white weathered bones atop her firewood creating an eerie atmosphere. Her staging and emphasis of light and dark throughout her space created a clean, modern design with fabulously spooky balance.
This stunning Halloween hearth design, created by Jamison Rantz of Rogue Engineer, displays smaller skeletons dangling over the mouth of the fireplace. Talk about a chilling Halloween scene! The coiled orange lights mimic the appearance of burning coals and highlight the bone-white forms hanging from the dark painted mantel, creating a clever and eye-catching take on decorating with skeletons.
A classic glass cloche housing a small skull ties the look together nicely. The stack of vintage books, peeling mercury glass potion vessels and glass bottles arranged across the mantel creates the feel of a spooky witche’s den, with all the materials for casting spells.
Scott Stoll of Stolloween is a master of Halloween decorations. He completely transformed the front of his house into an incredibly extensive Halloween scene. This look features an assortment of skeletal creatures — what a haunting menagerie! The mix of forms and varied sizes of his skeletons adds visual density to the fun, sinister atmosphere.
The colored spotlights he used create brooding shadows adding to the creepy atmosphere and drawing attention to the poseable skeleton rider on the back of this life size skeletal horse.
Elisha Albretsen of Pneumatic Addict dispersed bones throughout her entire spooky front door decorations. The skeleton relaxing on a swinging bench sets the tone for this haunting welcome, while individual bones propped up and mixed in with her gargoyle sitting atop a DIY column and tombstone add creepy continuity to the scene.
We loved Elisha’s creative idea to hang a cluster of skulls, a spine and skeletal hands from her front door in the place of her knocker. The group of five skulls gazing blankly out from the center of the scene gives the exterior of her home an especially imaginative and haunting feel and is a true focal point as guests approach her home. We’re sure the neighbors are a little wary of stopping by!
Talk about a centerpiece that’s sure to blow your guests away! Alexi Politis of Seeking Alexi made an amazing graveyard-themed centerpiece unlike any we’ve seen before.
The deathly hands rising from the center of the table are complemented by skulls, bones and skeletons scattered in and around the graveyard, adding depth to the scene and transforming the table into an inspired Halloween table setting that is truly one of a kind. We can’t blame these bodies for wanting to rise up from the dead and join this festive tablescape!
