Simple Tweaks for 3 Modern Farmhouse Furniture Projects

Simple Tweaks for 3 Modern Farmhouse Furniture Projects: Grandy Sliding Door Buffet Table

These DIY farmhouse furniture projects add rustic style to the kitchen, living room and entryway. Using Liberty Hardware, any piece of furniture can be transformed into a modern farmhouse style with varying stains, knobs and drawer pulls.

Liberty offers three gorgeous modern farmhouse furniture projects along with a few simple tweaks to make them even more impressive.

Inspiration is all around us. As big name bloggers and home improvement shows continue to showcase the chic but livable look of the Modern Farmhouse, we created three pieces to accent this approachable style. Each piece blends seamlessly into a variety of home décor styles and allows you to play with this hot new trend.

Ana White’s Grandy Sliding Door Buffet

Our first piece is a wonderful buffet that allows you to create a focal point in the dining room while keeping dishes stored out of sight. Our plans came directly from Ana White’s Grandy Sliding Door Buffet. We especially love the modern detail of using sliding door hardware to add versatility to the piece, but the functionality of the buffet is what sets these plans apart.

The construction of the piece – at a whopping 91 in. long – still allows for an open and airy feeling, with the option of concealment behind the doors.

When it came to building and installing the barn doors, we chose the Everbuilt Dark Oil Rubbed Bronze Sliding Door Hardware and followed the general guidelines given in Ana’s plan. We came across this really helpful YouTube installation video for the hardware.

One thing we did notice is most existing plans showed barn doors on a buffet being attached with one piece of hardware directly down the center. Since a piece of furniture does not provide the space for a bottom track like proper installation, hanging the doors down the center can cause them to hang loosely and pivot where the doors are unsecured on the bottom. We recommend two pieces of hardware per door for stability, or utilize a small caster against the back of your barn door to roll along the bottom edge of the buffet.

When building a focal piece of furniture or decorating a room, try to tie in all the elements of a room to ensure to provide a cohesive, polished look.  That’s why for our door hardware we chose to use the Liberty Oil Rubbed Bronze 5-1/6 in. Artesia Cabinet Pull. Not only were the bronze finishes complementary, but by using a cabinet pull instead of door hardware we kept the scale smaller, which helps keep the focus on the beauty of the sliding hardware.

When it comes to choosing paint and stain colors, there is a great opportunity to mix and match for a unique look. We recommend matching the top of the buffet and barn doors by using the same grade wood and stain color.

We chose Minwax Special Walnut Stain for a warm, rustic wood tone. You can create an even more seamless look between your two toned buffet and room by factoring in the color of your walls when choosing the color for your buffet. If you have earth-toned walls, you can balance with a deeper toned paint color to keep the farmhouse style. Or if you have a bolder wall color, you can create balance by painting your buffet in a mid-toned earthy color like Behr’s #710F-4 Sage Gray.

When it comes to choosing your serving ware and decorative accents, white is a classic farmhouse color choice. Using white dishes can really help provide contrast to the depth and limited lighting within the buffet. However, this is your opportunity to make a statement! If you have chosen white to paint the exterior of your cabinet, look for a contrasting color such as a bold navy or lilac. For the finishing touches we recommend accents of pewter, galvanized steel, and fresh greenery.

Shanty 2 Chic’s Turned Leg Console Table

Your entryway is the perfect place to make a modern first impression for your guests. What better way to impress than a bold table in a fresh new style? Dependent upon the size of your entryway, the depth of a table can be somewhat of a concern. Shanty 2 Chic’s Console Table is a perfect choice for a lasting first impression in mid-sized entryways.

The length of the table adds functionality while creating additional space, but is low profile off the wall allowing your guests to pass by with ease. The table features a bottom shelf that provides additional space to store accessories like a pillow or blanket, or could be repurposed for shoe storage.

The plans for the table are very easy to read and follow, and the build only took a day to complete. We used the recommended table legs in the plan, but they can easily be modified to fit any style table leg or length that works best for you and your home. The only modifications to the plan we made was to add the drawers for extra storage.

We used the same Minwax Special Walnut Stain for the planked wood table top, giving it a direct tie in to the warm wood look of buffet’s planked wood top. For our paint color we chose Behr #N490-6 Calligraphy a warmer indigo blue that compliments both neutral gray and taupe walls.

Hardware can sometimes be referred to as the jewelry of the home, which is why we took the opportunity to create a bold statement and point of differentiation in our hardware selection. We chose the Liberty 3″ Elegant Square Cabinet Pull in Polished Nickel.

It’s amazing what you can do with a simple finish or style change of the hardware. The architectural details of the pull mixed with a shiny metallic finish let the hardware pop off the paint color and capture the light of the doorway.

Mixing of hardware finishes used to be considered a big decorating faux pas, but these days we feel encouraged to try a mixture of metallic finishes. In fact, you can add to your modern farmhouse décor by creating a mixture of finishes throughout your home like raw galvanized metal, deep bronzes and even a bold but perfect polished nickel.

Complete your farmhouse look with a few statement piece accessories. The Galvanized Metal Lanterns are an end of summer steal that can be paired with groupings of LED candles for a more casual look. Try using woven texture basket to balance raw wood bowls and contrast the darker stain and paint color. You can always add a secondary basket or small trunk for additional storage.

Ana White’s Reclaimed Wood Console Table

Our final piece is a real show-stopper and is ideal for a wide variety of uses. Ana White’s Reclaimed Wood Console Table is a workhorse table with beautiful details that really give your room a standout look.

The plans were very easy to follow and allotted for two large drawers rather than a series of smaller ones. We loved the look of multi-toned drawers, but really liked the functionality of the larger storage space.

The only modification we made to the plans was to adjust the sides of the table and size of the drawers to accommodate drawer slides.

The plan doesn’t specifically call out how to attach the drawers and if built to spec, you would require wood slat drawers. If you’ve ever built something with wood slat doors before you know drawer slides are a must.

We chose different stains for our drawer fronts than what had been recommended in the plans, but followed the same principals using different colors and shading.

Our five faux drawer fronts were stained in Minwax Jacobean, Minwax Red Chestnut, Minwax Natural, Minwax Provincial, Minwax Dark Walnut. They are super easy to wood glue and tack in, but they need cabinet hardware added for extra stability. Even with wood glue and nails, the cabinet hardware helped tremendously to keep the fronts attached.

Like any good statement piece, our hardware selection was the finishing touch for the project. In the original plans, there are different types of hardware but they look to be in the same family of bronzes. Take this opportunity for full customization and mixed hardware finishes to find the best fit for each drawer front.

Here is our breakdown of hardware selection on the table, by finish:

Top Left: Provincial and  Liberty Hardware 2¼ in. Ring Pull in Flat Black finish.
Top Middle:  Natural Stain and Liberty Hardware 1⅜ in. Harmon Knob in Warm Chestnut finish
Top Right: Jacobean Stain and Liberty Hardware 4 in. Mission Style Ring Pull in Wrought Iron
Bottom Left: Dark Walnut Stain and Liberty Hardware Dual Mount Cup Pull in Warm Chestnut Finish
Bottom Right: Red Chestnut Stain and Liberty Hardware 3½ in. Hammercraft Pull in Black

We recommend using the final completed piece to layout your hardware for each drawer front. Try to use a subtle variety of black finishes and mix that with the Warm Chestnut for a more rustic look on some drawer fronts.

The last improvement we made to this plan was to add Liberty Hardware Petite Caster in a Brushed Brass finish. The Brass finish ties into the gold flecking of the warm chestnut, and contrasts with the white paint of the legs giving it a chic tie in to the statement of the piece.

The beauty of the Modern Farmhouse style is that the vibe is relaxed and comfortable, yet still gives you maximum style.  It’s a great look for mixing and matching metal and wood finishes, and works with both bold and neutral color palettes.
