Decorating for Fall with Enchanting Lanterns

Decorating for Fall with Enchanting Lanterns

Decorating for Fall

Although lanterns were once objects of functional necessity, they have evolved into ornamental decor pieces that are the perfect accent to almost any design aesthetic. Sure, lanterns can be used any time of the year — but we were especially inspired by the many ways our Halloween Harvest Style Challenge partners incorporated lanterns into their seasonal designs.

Popular home decor blogger Charlotte Smith, of Ciburbanity, created a beautiful, botanical botanical mantel that adds a mixture of vibrant colors and textures to her space. Charlotte created a fun, DIY, copper pipe pennant flag, which she balanced with gorgeous metal lanterns — and the result is stunning!

Charlotte included one large lantern to anchor the display, as well as a smaller lantern grouped with pumpkins to add visual density. The copper sheen of the lanterns against the natural wood of the mantel creates continuity throughout the space, while the decorative fall accents contribute to the rustic feel of this seasonal mantel.

Ashley Lloyd of Let’s Mingle chose to decorate her fall front porch for fall with matte black lanterns surrounded by traditional harvest elements, including corn husks and hay bales. She added fall color and flair by filling her lanterns with gourds.

The darkly colored lanterns contrast beautifully against the rich fall hues of the seasonal squashes and really make the metallic corn husks pop! Ashley’s front porch design perfectly mixes traditional with modern style for this lovely autumnal look.

Evoking a modern seasonal vibe, this stunning harvest themed mantel by Haneen Matt of Haneen’s Haven centers around a beautiful arbor constructed entirely from copper piping. This metallic masterpiece acts as a picture frame for the hearth, while the two similarly hued copper lanterns placed below the arbor balance the space perfectly.

By evenly spacing her lanterns, Haneen emphasizes the symmetry of her design and establishes the fireplace and mantel as the focal point of the room.  Arranging a variety of accessories in different sizes, heights and shapes around the bases of the lanterns adds visual complexity to the overall aesthetic of the hearth.

Decorating for fall often includes spooky scenes for Halloween. To create a creepy Halloween atmosphere around her home, Elisha Albretsen of Pneumatic Addict used vintage-inspired lanterns to add a spooky touch to her front porch decorations.

Opaque lanterns are hung high on the doorframe, lending scale and height to the creepy graveyard design surrounding her doorway. Shredded fabric pieces cascading from the top of the lanterns add an eerie touch to the Halloween atmosphere Elisha has cultivated at her own front door. What a difference those little details can make!

Lanterns are the perfect endlessly customizable decor piece for every home. From switching up their finish and color with spray paint, to filling them with different objects and materials, lanterns can easily transition from one season to the next while elevating the look of almost any stylized space. Whether you use different lanterns for each of your seasonal spaces or swap out the items on display, make the most out of this versatile decoration!
