How to Install a Ceiling Fan

How to Install a Ceiling Fan

If you don’t already have ceiling fans in your home, you should. They can save energy and lower your power bill, and sometimes a gentle breeze from a ceiling fan is more comfortable than air conditioning. Installing a ceiling fan is a DIY project just about anyone can do with just a few tools.

Kathy Owen knows a thing or two about DIY projects. She writes the DIY and decor blog  Petticoat Junktion. Here she shows us how to install a ceiling fan in just a few simple steps.

The hubby and I waited years to build a workshop where we could work on DIY projects together. Finally in 2012 we were able to have the workshop built. At the time our construction budget didn’t allow for heating or cooling of the space.  Well, living in Tennessee, that’s a problem.

The workshop is 24 ft. x 40 ft. and has 6 light fixtures in the ceiling. We decided to replace 3 of the fixtures with ceiling fans to help with the heating and cooling. We choose the 52 inch Carriage House II ceiling fan by Hampton Bay. The fan is the flush mount type and has a light kit with four lights.

Tools Needed For Project

Step 1: Turn Power Off

Locate the fuse box and switch off the circuit breaker to the ceiling lights. Flip the light switch to on to be sure the power is turned off.

Step 2: Unpack Ceiling Fan

Unpack the ceiling fan and refer to the owner’s manual or installation guide to review the parts list and installation instructions.

Step 3: Remove Existing Fixture

Stand on the ladder and remove the existing light fixture using the appropriate tools.

Step 4: Install Mounting Plate

Install the mounting plate to the outlet box or ceiling joist. Our outlet box was attached to the side of the joist. We pulled the black and white ground wires from the outlet box through the hole in the mounting plate and attached the plate to the ceiling joist.

Step 5: Attach The Fan Motor

The motor bracket has a slot made to slide onto the hook on the mounting plate. This is a great idea. You have both hands free to connect the wires.

If necessary use a pair of wire strippers to strip excess insulation from the wires.

Carefully push the wires into outlet box or between the motor bracket and mounting plate. Attach the motor bracket to the mounting plate using the locknuts provided.

Step 6: Attach The Fan Housing

The fan housing has two slots that align with two screws on each end of the mounting plate. Turn the housing until the slots engage with the screws.

Add and tighten the other two screws, one on each end of the mounting plate

Step 7: Attach Fan Blades

Attach the fan blade to the blade bracket using the screws provided. The blades are reversible and I chose the side with the lighter finish. I used a Philips head screwdriver and tightened the screws double checking to make sure they were secure.

Next attach the blades to the motor. The motor screws are pre-attached to the blades. There is a handy dandy slot on the bottom of the motor that makes attaching the blades easy. Use a drill and bit to securely attach the fan blades to the motor.

Step 8: Attach The Light Kit

The light kit is pre-wired and has one connector that attaches to the motor connector.

Step 9: Attach The Glass Shades

Loosen the three screws in each of the shade holder cups until you can slide the glass shade into the cup. Tighten each screw securely by hand.

We found it worked best to tighten the three screws a little bit at a time so the shade is balanced in the middle of the cup. Screw in the 60 watt bulbs included with the fan kit

Step 10: Attach The Pull Chains

Step 11: Turn Power On

Switch the circuit breaker for the lights to the on position. Turn on the switch for the ceiling fan. Pull the chains on the ceiling fan and go through all of the light kit and fan settings to be sure they are working.

The fan has 3 speeds and the lights have 3 settings. Also check the switch that alters the direction of the fan blades.

The remaining two fans took less than an hour each to install.

We love our fans. I don’t know why we didn’t think about installing ceiling fans sooner.
